Default On this day 6 July - the Battle of Grenada

On the 6th of July 1779, British and French fleets fought the Battle of Grenada, an engagement taking place in the West Indies as part of the American War of Independence. A few days earlier, the French, under the command of Admiral Comte D'Estaing, captured Grenada from the British. The British fleet, under the command of Admiral John Byron, were initially sailing to Saint Vincent, to recapture it from the French, but upon receiving news of the capture of Grenada, changed its course accordingly.

Having spotted the British fleet, D'Estaing ordered his ships to weigh anchor, form a line according to speed, and sail northward from their anchorage off St. George’s Town on the southwest portion of Grenada. The unusual composition of the French line resulted in Byron underestimating its actual strength. The British admiral gave orders to chase, but as his fleet approached the French, he realized his mistake, and issued new orders to form a battle line, resulting in a disorderly and confused attack. Though the battle was indecisive, D'Estaing still maintained a superior force, but he, subsequently, failed to capitalize on it by not seizing greater control of the West Indies.
