On this day 1 July - the Battle of Colberger Heide

On the 1st of July 1644, Danish and Swedish fleets fought the Battle of Colberger Heide off the coast of Schleswig-Holstein, Germany. The Swedish fleet, under the command of Clas Larsson Fleming, was transporting Torstenson and his army to the Danish islands. The Danish fleet, under the command of Jørgen Vind, was sailing west when it met the eastern-bound Swedish fleet near the island of Fehmarn. The two fleets exchanged fire as they sailed among the islands in the area, only for darkness to bring the battle to a close. The primary result of the battle was that the Danes’ frustrated the intended landing. During the fighting, Vind sustained mortal wounds, dying soon thereafter, and Christian IV, King of Denmark, lost an eye, but sprang to his feet, remaining on deck until the battle ended.

On 1 July 1801, Commodore Richard Dale’s squadron arrived at Gibraltar for the protection of American interests and to strike at the Barbary Pirates in the Mediterranean. Squadron ships were USS President, USS Philadelphia, USS Essex, and USS Enterprise, which had arrived 5 days earlier. The squadron was dispatched on 20 May.
