Default Well I Guess it Was Unavoidable....

I have so much enjoyed this site and my activities on it, that after watching all the Hornblower episodes again, the Gregory Peck Hornblower film again, and watching "Master and Commander" for the umpteenth time, I have careened to a storage closet and rummage about greatly (imagine how that pleased my wife) to come up with the box containing my Patrick O'Brian books (also my first editions of the Hornblower novels and companion book). It has been at least a decade (maybe more) since I sailed with Patrick O'Brian and this summer I will ship out with him once again. Sitting in front of me is a stack of books consisting of "Master and Commander" and my companion books "A Sea of Words," "Harbors and High Seas," and "Patrick O'Brian's Navy." It is like seeing old friends after a long absence. I'm sure I won't get through all the novels this summer, but I am going to see how far I get (in between Sails of Glory scenarios that is)...

Hear, hear! I intend to spend this weekend in our favorite quiet anchorage, about 20 miles south of our house, reading PoB's books 13 and 14 and playing SoG in the evening with my wife, Suzanne.

Not really Bill, but when I get my Kindle working again I will publish here a series of books that you may wish to add to that reading list.
    Rob.
The Business of the commander-in-chief is first to bring an enemy fleet to battle on the most advantageous terms to himself, (I mean that of laying his ships close on board the enemy, as expeditiously as possible); and secondly to continue them there until the business is decided.

That is a great way to spend a summer.

I may listen to a few of the audiobooks. It's much more accessible as I can do that while driving or something. I sad to say I will not have the time to read them, but on the other hand they are masterfully read by Ric Jerrom.

I started Master and Commander a few days ago. I am 50% through the book. The descriptions of the sails and maneuvering is outstanding.

I must give it another go on your recommendation gentlemen.
40 years on can put an entirely different complexion on things, and I must confess that I did rather enjoy the film.

The film was a mix of mostly the first and tenth books (as the title suggested) so you have some reading to read the original..

Last time I read them I don't think they went above about the fourth book.

Well, Mother Nature got in the way. No wind and rain on Sunday, made a sailing weekend less than appealing. Still Patrick O'Brian kept me company at home.

Par for the course once the weekend is over the weather is beautiful with a nice breeze! I can always tell when I am about to go sailing the wind dies and when I am in the office or about to go for a bike ride the wind picks up!

When I finish my current book I intend to re read them. There were only four published when I last read the books.
