The Business of the commander-in-chief is first to bring an enemy fleet to battle on the most advantageous terms to himself, (I mean that of laying his ships close on board the enemy, as expeditiously as possible); and secondly to continue them there until the business is decided.

John Carter, nicknamed King of Prussia, was the most famous and capable Cornish smuggler. 'Prussia Cove" in Cornwall, UK - located between Penzance and Porthleven - was named after him. The nickname was given to him because as a child, when he played war with his brothers, he always pretended to be Frederick the Great, King of Prussia.

His supremacy lasted from 1777 to 1807, and at his death he was succeded by his stepson William Richards under whom "Prussia Cove" kept its reputation. Most of what is know about John Carter is a local tale. John and his brother became the leading Cornish Smugglers.

Today I present 'The Black Pig' in Barnsole, Kent. Whilst the pub sign shows a farm animal, the name has naval associations. The building has a very interesting history. As the story goes the timbers, which were used to build the pub, came from The Spanish Armada (known to the English as The Black Pigs - hence the name) wrecked off the the Kent coast in 1588. Although it is thought that some part of the building dates further back.

The Business of the commander-in-chief is first to bring an enemy fleet to battle on the most advantageous terms to himself, (I mean that of laying his ships close on board the enemy, as expeditiously as possible); and secondly to continue them there until the business is decided.

Since you have posted about the most famous brewery in my home state, I figured I'd add something here. The brew pub above is their new location which also includes two restaurants. Here is the original started in the 1990s:

This one was knocked down to make way for the new building above. It was originally a restaurant that went out of business and was purchased by Sam Calagione to start his brew pub/nanobrewery. The story goes that he borrowed money from his in-laws (his wife is a Delaware native) and everyone was skeptical because the location had seen many failed restaurants. I first went there shortly after it opened. Back in the mid 90s brew pubs were a novel thing and generally you went for the beer not the food! Now they are gastropubs often with really good food to pair with your beer.

Here is a photo of the brewery site further inland from Rehobeth Beach:

I suppose this part should be in the Tipple thread but this year Dogfish Head merged with Boston Beer Co. (Sam Adams) to form the second largest American owned brewery behind Yuegling. I suppose a merger between two craft breweries is better than it being swallowed up by InBev! Here is a photo of Boston beer founder on the left (familiar in the US from TV adverts) and Sam on the right.

Interesting, Eric. I really like Dogfish head. Pity they don’t export.

As do we all Eric. Unfortunately looks as if the Costa Del Dorset is about as far as I will get before the Spring.
