Grand job, and after nearly two years wait my 1250 model of the HMS Nelson arrived today from Navwar. I now find out that they are marketed from Chesterfield. Mine came from the States. Funny old world, but at least I can now go head on at the Italian Fleet. |So these modern ships are spot on for my current mind set Dave. I'll have to see what I can find later.

David, for someone who does not enjoy beer, I am delirious to visit that brewery. Unfortunately, I doubt carrying bottles overseas would be practical.

    Now that is talking Dave.
I may have lead a sheltered life where ale is concerned, but I have only once in my life seen a beer stronger than that. That was at a pub in Howarth where they had a 10% Galeforce I imagine. Mrs Bligh would not let me sample it as I was navigating back across the moors.

In Sweden strange alcoholic laws used to make very strong beer a popular thing, often stronger than that. Apparently they made them by adding spirits and they tasted awful. This I'm guessing is still "natural" strength.

I have no doubt that you are right Jonas.
I know from my study of 18th Century brewing that the "strong" ale which came from the first Maltings was never more than about 25% and subsequent Maltings resulted in lesser strengths until you arrived a small ales drunk by most poor people. Allowing for improvements in modern techniques I expect you could push the limit for hop produced beer up a bit but not much. The strongest that I can find in modern ales is this one at 13%

I'm still trying to find some more of that Batemans Victory Ale at 5.9% That's good enough for an evening spent over a game or two.

Skibsøl (ship's beer), fermented, alcohol weak (2,4 vol.), dark Danish beer style. It has a relatively strong hop flavor and become as the earliest Danish beers brewed with smoked malt.

These two bottles with which I started the thread were presents from Neil for Christmas. I have been unable to locate further supplies since then until yesterday. Forced by a car accident on our local bypass to seek alternative shopping outlets as the main road was closed for 11 hours with 3 mile tail backs in all directions, we headed out to the other side of Nottingham to do our weekend shop. What I discovered was a Morrisons which stocked both brews. I therefore give you a toast to Morrisons.
The Victory Ale (for those who have not experienced it) is 6% and the Broadside 6.3%

And just so you know, Morten, being drunk doesn't grant you a commission in a brig.

Ha... you are so right my dear neighbor. But i love driving my family to madness with the "drunken sailor" song. Unfortunately, I have become infected by the song, my self. but as you surely are aware, when the anchor is in the water, the men are fed and morale is high, then we drink and sing
if we could ever be so lucky to play together one day, i think I know what strategy I should use against a experienced captain like you Jonas ... a lot of wonderful Danish beer
...put him in the brig until he's sober...

I would be sourly tempted but my stomach can't really handle much carbonated beverages. I'll drink whisky and port instead.

I still wish we could play a game some day.
