    Biography

    Paperback
    Summary:
Lord Thomas Cochrane, 10th Earl of Dundonald, 1775-1860, was the real fighting captain whose bold career inspired the fiction of Marryat, Forester, and O'Brian. Any of you who have read O'Brien will be familiar with Captain Aubrey's capture of the large xebek frigate Caca Fuego with the mush smaller sloop of war Sophie. This was based on the true story of Cochrane's little sloop Speedy capturing the much larger Spanish Gamo.

Cochrane's fiery temper and staunch principles made many political enemies and he was eventually driven to to command ships in the navies of Chile, Brazil, Peru, and Greece, providing outstanding leadership in their struggles for freedom.

This was a very good book and especially enjoyable when about events I recognised from the Hornblower and Aubrey/Maturin series.
