Thread: The big Five

    Default The big Five

Wonder what main acting nation of the Napoleonic Wars do you like the best?

Reduced them on the big Five: England, France, Austria, Russia and Prussia

It's a difficult choice, cause I like commanders, ships and troops of different nations, for example the KGL, the Rifles, Nassau and Brunswik troops, Archduke Karl, etc...

But I like the french the most, for many reasons.

I have always been interested in the Russian Napoleonic Fleet ever since pushing around the counters in Napoleons War and Empire in Arms from Avalon Hill. I addition and as a consequence I am also interested in the Swedish fleet. I am sure that once the game launches that the options to field ships from these fleets will become available.

French had the finest ships and some of the poorest crews, it's a problem when those damn Brits wouldn't let you out of port!

Have a great fondness for Erzherzog Karl (Archduke Charles), so I voted Austria, since all minors are absent. Otherwise it would have been United Provinces/Batavian Republic/Kingdom of Holland/...3 years without favourite.../The Netherlands.

I hope you fared better in Empire in Arms then I did. In the last game, the nefarious English offered me (Russia) safe harbor in their port against the French. Like a fool I accepted and they promptly blockaded me. So much for the English/Russian alliance.

I also hope they will add a Russian 74 and a 100. The Aleksander Nevski and the Rotislav would be great.

Blockades in harbours are a centuries proven tactic of British Navy. Germans can talk about it for hours, especially from the WWI (oh, I am 100 years in future, yay!) :)

I chose France, not for not liking the famous English navy, just to have an excuse when my (future) ships got sunk. "You know, the Brits, they rule the waves, we had no chance to win, blablabla, we have a historical result".:) Since I'm not a hardcore maritime player, I would rahter man a gun then command a ship (God save my crew!). So playing an underdog is always easier to loose (should I choose Prussian navy instead? hmmm...). Well I have no idea about neither Russian nor Austrian navy achievements of the era.
Comte, you seem to be an expert of Napoleonics, could you link me up to some reading (but not too long) about navies of the era?;)

Now this is a bit difficult for me, when is anything simple these days?
On sea England, although my avatar was in fact Scottish.
However on land I am a Bonapartist and as nearly all my friends had armies for Britain, France, Prussia & Russia, I have a soft spot and a large 15mm Austrian Army :)

Don't feel too bad Chris. I have a good size 15mm Ottoman army waiting in the port of Bodrum to be picked up by the SGN Turkish fleet. Waiting and waiting and ..........

Default Who'd not want to be in the French navy : )

At present 75% want to run with the RN, another 11% spread amongst other countries involved with the various Coalition's wars against France...who are you all going to fight guys? The 14% of us foolish enough to want to play the French at least wont want for opponents ;)

Mind you the poll didn't include the Dutch, Spanish (oh there will be a huge groundswell of support for them) or the US. It would get a bit boring though just fighting out large frigate battles with the US..come to the dark side and have a real challenge when you eventually play..join the French fleet!

We offer, great food (definitely not spoiled by being in storage too long or damaged by damp because we never go to sea)

You get liberty, equality and fraternity for free!

You get wonderfully built ships (best not to mention the crew quality)

You get wine, not that rum rubbish the RN serve up, no buggery here either, and forget the lash it isn't fitting for "the citizens" of France. Let the English beat their downtrodden subjects.

No hard tack either, only the best croissants baked the same day

If you're really good, avoid the RN, pick off lots of merchantmen you may make Admiral one day even if you start below decks.

You get really cool medals. You wont see a "Legion d'Honneur" in the RN no matter how good you are. You'll be dumped on shore as soon as there's peace with not even a pat on the back

You get to say "merde" and other fancy words without your friends having a clue what you are talking about.

France has the best beaches of any of the protagonists, so while you're not sailing the seas (ie pretty much all the time) you can soak up the sun and improve your tan

Plus you get to visit (well actually you get to stay..something like the Hotel California- "you can check in any time you like but you can never leave" thanks to the RN) lots of beautiful ports in the Med, the costa del sol, the Brittany coast...

Really when you think about it, the Marine nationale offers all the luxury and contentment you could want without the silly nonsense of having to go to sea with all the risks entailed.

I like playing the French and Spanish in AoS games (as I do the Italians in WW2 games) - playing the underdog means if you lose you've still done as well as your historical counterpart :)

That said, in AWI games I like playing on the American side as I can take on the persona of my family's "dark side" :)

I have always enjoyed rooting for England during this period, but as I read more about the War of 1812, I am growing to appreciate/respect the U.S. Navy more. However, given the choices, I'm for England.
