Default What's on Your Workbench for January 2023?

Here's my New Year's Day project.

I had this bit of land to finish and a tiny fort lying around. It's Fort Vauville from Brigade. I checked it out on Google Maps and saw there was an outbuilding and stone fence, so this influenced my layout. Then I decided that I needed something to defend. An optical telegraph tower seemed perfect. Since I didn't have a casting of one, I decided to scratch build one out of styrene bits.

It's upside down in the picture and the antenna will be trimmed off short to make buttresses.

Here's a link to a picture of the prototype.

    Nice work Dobbs.
From this photo it looks as if it also has some defensive ditches along both sides of that outer wall.

My fort is just going to have to make do without defensive ditches, but it does get a telegraph to defend.

You are getting this together faster than my new project which seems to be stalled at the moment.

All progress is good progress. Your cliffs are looking very good, as seen on your recent AAR.

Nothing to report on the SoG ship front, but I have started on the Venetian galley fleet. First up is a heavily armed Galleass. The Venetians had 6 of these at Lepanto and they were generally towed into position in front of the battle line. Behind it you see a fusta, which is used to hold dice for marking hull damage on the Galleass. This model is rigged and ready to be put together for final paintwork and decals/flags.

All ready for action then Dobbs, with the added chance of taking and burning down a semaphore tower, or using it to send misleading messages to the nearest Naval base!

Here I am laminating two pieces of teak together to build a new compression post to support the mast on Grace.

Yes, the price of Teak has skyrocketed since the last time I used any,and as for Rosewood, all my little offcuts are worth as much as a Spanish treasure ship and about as hard to source these days.
I like your Bandsaw bye the way. looks like a proper bit of engineering.

Here's a little evening project. I had the masts of a Victory that had met an ignoble end. I thought that an Ocean would look more mighty with full sails.

Painting will come in the following days.

    Good looking innovation Dobbs.
I did a full set on my Santissima Trinidad like that.

These books just arrived ready for my working up the Copenhagen game with Captain Duff for this year's Doncaster.

Today's project; I never liked the headsails on Protee, so I decided to make my own out of sheet styrene.

Modifications I've made previously are adding caps to the lower masts and stitching the spanker sail from a Portland 50, as I think that Ares intended the older style to go on these ships. The mizzen top and t'gallant seem to have been pulled from my spares. They aren't what the ship came with.

In a similar vein, I'm considering buying a Neptune 1803 and a Bertin and switching their spankers. I don't really want a Bucentaur class ship.

Would anyone interested in a Neptune with the modern spanker for say $15 plus whatever it takes to ship it to wherever you are?

Let me know the cost as soon as you know the postage rate for the UK and I will reimburse you.

As my last project of the month, I decided to give a British 1st rate twin headsails and an unfurled forecourse.

The foremast is from a 3rd rate. The second headsail is sheet styrene.
