Default Bonhomme Richard versus the HMS Isis

This is my third SoG game where I've graduated up to using the advanced and some of the optional rules. I 'sailed' the Bonhomme Richard while Dobbs' AI took the helm on the Isis.

The chuffed Commander Percival Shadoo stood on the quarterdeck of the converted merchantman, the Bonhomme Richard. She was a pig alright, but she was his pig. His first command. His mission was simple. The British ship the HMS Isis had been spotted sailing unescorted. It would be a great moral boost for the revolutionary cause to sink or capture this menace to Yankee vessels. The Bonhomme Richard was a little outclassed by the Isis but Percival was confident that with a bit of luck the Isis would be his prize and the start of an illustrious naval career. He scanned the horizon and…luck was with him…there was the Isis and the Bonhomme Richard had the advantage of the weather gauge.

The Isis veered to starboard, but if her captain hoped to shake off Percival he was wrong. The Bonhomme Richard slipped to starboard.

The two ships continued to starboard.

Having led the Bonhomme Richard to starboard, the Isis slipped to larboard. Percival followed his prey.

Slowly Percival was gaining on his prey. Soon the Isis would be his prize.

The Bonhomme Richard was dead behind the Isis. A little closer and sharp turn would allow the Bonhomme Richard a decent raking shot on the Isis.

On board the Isis, Captain Shownomercy Dobbs, smiled at his helmsman. “Time to teach this rebel a lesson. Hard a-larboard”. With that the Isis suddenly turned and delivered a wicked, raking broadside at close range.

Percival was stunned. The Bonhomme Richard was a shambles. “She’s leaking badly, sir.” The turn of the Isis now presented the Bonhomme Richard a chance to return the favour. Her broadside raked the stern of the Isis but, with the damage from the Isis, it was a weak broadside. Water washed over the main deck of the Bonhomme Richard as she listed badly to larboard.

The Isis gave one last long shot that added insult to injury. Percival had a ‘sinking’ feeling that this might well be his last command. “Should we strike our colours, sir?” “Please, before they’re pulled under the waves.” With that the remaining crew clung to whatever debris would keep them afloat in the hopes that the Isis would be gratuitous to her defeated enemy.
