    Default The Water is Wide

My daughter was singing this Elizabethan traditional Scottish/English song around the house today and I thought I'd share Judy Collins rendition of it with my ship mates:

Thank you for posting the link, Bill, that was a beautiful song. The tune is almost the same as one to which we sing the hymn 'When I Survey the Wondrous Cross' in church.

Very haunting melody Bill. It reminds me of when we did Wars of the Roses period and every year at Barclay Castle we had the Medieval Babes do a stage performance for us the evening before the show started.

The Business of the commander-in-chief is first to bring an enemy fleet to battle on the most advantageous terms to himself, (I mean that of laying his ships close on board the enemy, as expeditiously as possible); and secondly to continue them there until the business is decided.

Yes -- the history of the song includes many adaptations including for hymns. There's a bit of debate on its origins -- some argue for a Scots origin in the Hebrides, others argue for English origins. Everyone seems to agree it has early 1600's origins. There are many permutations on lyrics (including in Scots Gaelic).

Mind you they do come in a variety of guises during their stage show.
