Default Happy Father's Day All !

Enjoy the day Dad's everywhere. I am remembering today my Dad-- Chief Petty Officer George H. Brown, U.S. Navy (WW II veteran of the North Atlantic, Invasion of North Africa, Invasion of Sicily, Philippine Liberation invasions, invasion of Okinawa, and the surrender and occupation of Japan). As a purveyor of the world's worst Dad's jokes (I inherited this from my Dad) here is a story for all those Dad's out there....

    Back at you Bill.
He can't have been all that far from my own Dad then.
He was in that operation too, in the Fleet Air Arm on HMS Biter which was one of the support Carriers so kindly provided to us by your own country. I remember him telling me that all the RN aircraft had the roundels changed to the Us insignia for this op to prevent any confusion in the air.
The Business of the commander-in-chief is first to bring an enemy fleet to battle on the most advantageous terms to himself, (I mean that of laying his ships close on board the enemy, as expeditiously as possible); and secondly to continue them there until the business is decided.

Yes it is probably so -- in addition to under way operations, my Dad's ship made periodic stops at Gibraltar -- he used to recount the story of an epic pub brawl between USN and RN personnel -- let's hope our Dads didn't meet that way!

Don't think Dad was ever in Gib, unless they called there on the way back from Australia, but one of his opos was. He served on the Illustrious, and that did some time in the Med on the Malta run.

While in the Pacific theater of operations, my Dad talked of many Australian and British ships with which they operated -- Peter (Teaticket) from the Wings site and I have determined our father's ships were in relative close concert in several operations -- who knows maybe our Dads were in relative proximity as well....

Apparently Biter did call at Gib once on her way back from Operation Torch in 1942.
Both Biter and Dasher were sent back to Gibraltar on 10 November. Biter joined a convoy for Greenock and arrived without incident on 19 November and went to Dundee.
