    The short answer Jason.
    A chippy is a slang term for anyone who works with wood, such as a joiner or a carpenter.

    It can, however, be a lot more convoluted than that.

    "The Chippy" on an RN warship is the common nickname for the Chief Shipwright and "The Chippy Shop" is the coloquail name for the Shipwright's Workshop.
