Thread: Earl of Warwick's Cog. Scale 1/72

  1. #1

Default Earl of Warwick's Cog. Scale 1/72

Hi, I want to share with you the progress of building a Cog that have been commissioned.
This time, the scale is far from the works that I tend to show. In fact, it is the first time that I face this scale.
The ship in question is the personal ship of the Earl of Warwick the kingmaker. It is a ship that is framed within the period of the war of the two roses in England.
To face this project I have used the Zvezda brand kit. The kit in question is the Thomas boat, a Cog of a single mast.
As you can see in the photographs, the conversions are numerous and there is still a lot of work to be done. Little by little I will be adding new photos.
I hope you enjoy the process.

    A cordial greeting,
    Julián

Continuing with the work in the hull. Today I finished all the modifications I had to do.
I added an additional height to the hull, bringing it even closer to the original model.
I added the rudder and made all the modifications to make it look good. In the absence of plans and detail images, I had to use images of other ships of the time but finally I think looks good.
I have applied putty to all the joints of the ship with the base, although this part will not be seen because it will be covered by the sea but the putty gives rigidity to the set and guarantees that it stays well attached.

This afternoon I spent a little time and I decided to do some tests of paint on scraps of kit material and on a piece of thermosealed wood-effect plate. What do you think of these colors?

I have thought to use a light brown tone for the deck instead of a light ocher tone, I think it is more appropriate for this period and the other colours are for the sides of the hull.

Hello everyone, I add some photos of how the Cog evolves.

Once I got the methacrylate base, I proceeded to sculpt the waves with polymer clay that once dry had to be sealed with putty (typical retraction problems in these materials).
The next step was to apply white glue to the entire base to homogenize the textures of the sea. Once this is done, I have already painted the base colors of the boat. A reddish brown for the wood of the boat and an intense blue for the sea. I hope you ejoy.

Julián this will be a very beautiful model. I really enjoy your step-by-step narrative of its construction.

I continue with the painting works. There are still some hours of painting.

Today I have started to apply inks to the boat. I used the citadel inks, specifically AGRAX EARTHSHADE.

Beautiful! This "1/72" model has morphed into a perfect 25/28mm scale ship, great for wargamers of the late middle ages, as your test shots with Foundry medievals clearly show. Nice work!

The hull of the ship is quite advanced and it is time to put on the elements that will be on the deck (crew, artillery ...). I made the cannons from a reference of the Front Rank brand. I modified the artillery to resemble a naval artillery, then I made a mold in silicone and made several copies in resin. Prior to all this, I have requested permission from the Front Rank company to make these commercial copies, to which they responded affirmatively.

Regarding the crew. It is going to compose of different types:

    Men-at-arms.
    Nobles and heralds.
    Sailors and gunners.
    Archers and crossbowmen

I have now painted the men-at-arms as the client indicated to me, the clothing of the troops of the Earl of Warwick.
