    Default 3D Printed

A friend have a 3D printer of high quality. It prints using a liquid and gives incredible results.

Here are two of the models that were discussed earlier.

The first rate: (Said to be HMS Victory)

Wow! Those are fantastic! I guess a good, high quality printer and the right medium makes all the difference, huh? Thank you for sharing the excellent results, Jonas!

I will be using Sails of Glory masts for them and therefore didn't ask him to print them.

The holes for the masts are big, so I'm going to fill them in and pin masts on top.

I have a printed second rate too, but it's basically the same model with a few guns removed, open gun ports and a few other details changed.

I will use Langton stern galleries on the ships of the line as their windows look... awful. Beagle have a nicer stern, though.

Now the thousand dollar question Jonas.
Are they for sale and if so how much?
Also are your friends likely to take commissions for other ship designs ?

The designs were free and is available for everyone.

I just asked him to print these three ships as a test to see the quality of the printer and the models.

He must need some recompense for the materials at least if he makes any more for people Jonas. They are so good I'm sure a lot of people will want them.

I don’t know if he wants to mass produce ships, but I gave him 50 SEK for a ship, which is probably about €5. That was probably a friendly price partly because he wanted to see the quality of the print.

All we need are good models!

And thank you for the reputation, MrMo!

Just a pity about the poor fit of the Langton sterns Jonas. Do you think that there is any way around that challenge?

I'll have to look into it. The printed ships have too slim sides.

It might be possible to fill out the difference, but I will have to test it out.

Yes I look forward to seeing this develop.
However seems a bit expensive to buy an Ares ship just to harvest the masts. I realise the hulls can be used for wrecks etc , just saying.

I already have a few Masts but three have been used already for Clipper's Santisima Trinidad.
I suppose we could always augment them with Langton masts and sails.

I would suggest making your own masts and sails. It really is not that difficult.

There is masts that could be 3D-printed too.
They even differ for 1:1000 and 1:1200 to make them sturdy enough and better to print.

It's just my preference to use the same masts to make them fit in better.

Unfortunately for me I dont have spare masts, even if I could get some of those hulls.
I would be looknh yo get alternatives, I dont think Langton or Triton masts would look right on a 1/1000 hull.
I recall a Shapeways mast and sail is available but think they are only for frigates and smaller craft.
I shall look into the methods from Voll

The masts-and-sails pieces in my Shapeways stores are shown for 1:1000 scale small ships (corvettes, brigs, schooners) but I can custom-print an order to any larger size a customer wants (I just can't print them any smaller than shown). The price would of course increase as more material is used and if the customer wants it in a pricier material than the WSF (white strong and flexible) plastic I normally offer. Also, just bear in mind that at a VERY large size, tiny imperfections or details might not look as pleasing as they do at the normal size (where the eye and imagination take over).

Here's the page showing what I have available:

Thanks for that update Gina, I knew you made masts for small craft didnt realise you could and would make larger ones.
May be in touch if the hulls become available.

Hmm. Looks interesting. Hard sell if you don't have access to a 3d printer though. Looks like someone got the print and sell license level. Also Warlord's Black Seas game is coming out this fall with the same scale ships. If they offered the building files separately.....

The Kickstarter looks tempting (as if I didn't already have enough ships to build as it is). The sails though look lifeless to me, if they could get a bit more animation and detail there.....
