    Default Ratline help request

    Ahoy all,

I see that the Anchorage Store has ratlines to add to our ships that are very nice. Too nice, so now I must rig my ships! I see they are organized by the box numbers for the ship sizes. What ratlines should I get for the starter set? I haven't found these ships sold outside of the set and I can't find any numbers in the set.

    Thanks,

    TwoSheets (Peter)

    Hi Peter.
Your expert on all things Ratline like is Chris,(Captain Duff) I should drop him a PM with your questions.
    Rob.
The Business of the commander-in-chief is first to bring an enemy fleet to battle on the most advantageous terms to himself, (I mean that of laying his ships close on board the enemy, as expeditiously as possible); and secondly to continue them there until the business is decided.

Ordered a complete set of the at the AA.

You need to compare the ship classes with the ratline pack.

SGN 102 for example is for Temeraire class ships

SGN 104 is for Elizabeth class ships

    etc...

If you neet the fitting numbers you can compare them at the Ares Games SoG Ship pack page.

These are not the ratlines Chris uses but the ones I use.

There are four sets of ratlines available and they are for the very ships that are included in the starter.

For all the rest of the ships there are no ratlines available. You will have to either use the ones from the 74:s cut down to smaller ships or make due with other manufacturers sets like Chris have done.

See also Sven's answer for which is which.

I have used the ratlines from the aa store also, as has been mentioned the starter set has a Temeraire class, Elizabeth type , Concorde frigate and Amazon tupe frigate so just use the ratlines for SGN 101-104

If these are the same as the previous offering then each set will fit the appropriate ship and they will fit exactly for you.

However for me they are too fine and once painted and attached it is difficult to make them out. I also had problems removing them from the sprue, but that was most likely just me.
In the end , due to availability I went down the Langton ratlines route, not perfect fits but are a bit more substantial and once attached look the part.
I will try and find my frigate which I tried out the aa ratlines and compare to the Langtons for you.

Thanks Chris, that would be helpful. It will be good to see an AA vs Langton comparison. Langton would take a bit longer for me to get but if its worth the wait I won;t mind.

The absolutly biggest advantage of Langton is that they are easier to use to any ship. The AA you either have to modify yourself or use something else due to there not being any large enough to modify. AA is just in basically two sizes and two models per size.

As promised here are two frigates using aa stores ratlines and Langtons

    first Langton ratline PE06

here is the aa stores SGN01

    and both together

nothing wrong with both sets, my personal preference is the langtons, visually I find the aa too fine is all

Thank you for the comparison pictures, Chris.

I didn't remember the AA ratlines as that slim.
They are much wider on these ships:

Jonas, yes those do not look as fine as mine, I bought mine when they first appeared on the aa store a few years ago now, when did you get these ?

Sven all the rigging ropes are nylon bristles from a floor brush, cut to length and then glued in place

Cant say why then, I bought a full set of the four types all were very fine, which is one of the reasons I went elsewhere

Yes, they are very fine, but also wide. The one you showed looked slimmer than I remembered.

Ingenious Vol. Ideal for those Captains with less prize money to hand.

I like the look of the Langton lines but think for scale the AA ones are much better. When ordering the Langton lines do you go straight up ship rate to ship rate or do you have to adjust for the scale difference?

    Thanks in advance.

You adjust. Chris is the expert on which size to use for which ship.

    Hi Peter, as
I have said I went Langtons for a couple of reasons, one was availability, the aa store did not have them in stock for a long while, the other reason was the look, I prefer the look of the Langtons despite having to fiddle with the placing and sizeing.
If you ned any advice Just ask and .ill help as best I can.
The advantage of the aa store is the ratlines are made to fit that particular ship.
However I do not know if they can be made to fit others in the series, ie Hebe class, Portlands the First Rates and Spanish for example.

Thanks Chris. I have a couple of starter sets and another half dozen ships to rig at the moment. Orient(2), Montagne(2), Berwick and Bellona. I'll use your ARES to Langton list to get enough sets for what I have. I'll get enough to do up some more British ships I will get to even up the fleets.

Yup! Something like this is perfect for us captains living hand-to-mouth. What kind of string or wire did you use for these?
