    Default A Find !

In further evidence that I have much too much time on my hands, I was rummaging in one of our storage closets (always a joy to my Wife) and found my 2005 Historicon shirt (that convention was themed "Wooden Ships and Iron Men"). On its back it has a number of pithy quotes -- I attach front and back photos below. Remarkably it still fits me and has now been anointed my "official" Sails of Glory shirt !

I am a bit dubious about the last quotation Bill. Nevertheless, a great find after these years.
It is indeed a shirt worthy of the spirit of the Anchorage.
    Admiral Bligh.
The Business of the commander-in-chief is first to bring an enemy fleet to battle on the most advantageous terms to himself, (I mean that of laying his ships close on board the enemy, as expeditiously as possible); and secondly to continue them there until the business is decided.

I have that shirt too! IMO it is one of the better HMGS shirts over the years!

For the 25th anniversary they had several designs and I got one with a painting of a French cuirassier on it, optimistically but sadly I got the medium shirt

I have a recollection that Voltaire has a character in "Candide" say something like that -- my copy of "Candide" is in my office at work (and I won't be there for about another 10 days or so) -- so I can't definitively place it, but my bet is on "Candide" as the source.

Yes, it is from 'Candide'. It is Voltaire's satirical comment upon the execution of Admiral John Byng on 14th March 1757 for "failing to "do his utmost" to prevent Minorca falling to the French".

I was not dubious about the source gentlemen, rather the sentiment.
Hence the manner in which I signed off. Maybe I should have been less obtuse and signed ADMIRAL Bligh.

That is what worries me Jonas.
    Only one scapegoat available!
