    Default Sail Ho!

Ahoy Shipmates. I'm new here, and thought i would pop in and introduce myself.

I'm an ex-navy chap (HMS Leander). and have been a solo wargamer for 40+ years.
(favourite period? ancients.... but *anything* nautical also floats my boat).

Sail Ho ~ Unity project (about 75% complete)

I've also made this.... which is probably of more interest to you good folks here...

It runs in 'tabletop simulator' (a PC multi-game available via steam).

    Looks interesting Ken.
    What exactly does it achieve?
    Rob.
The Business of the commander-in-chief is first to bring an enemy fleet to battle on the most advantageous terms to himself, (I mean that of laying his ships close on board the enemy, as expeditiously as possible); and secondly to continue them there until the business is decided.

errr.. it's a multiplayer game, Rob. like on your tabletop, only virtual.
very handy for playing sails of glory (or any other game) with people around the world.
it's not a static screenshot, those are functional 3D game pieces.

i live on a boat, without a table. i missed wargaming with miniatures. so this is ideal for me.
the dogs don't scatter the pieces or chew the ships either. win-win.

    Thanks Ken.
That also clears up why your location is River Thames.

thanks for the warm welcome, Chaps.

many of the other places i visit are obsessed with Elves and Space Marines, so it's a real
pleasure to be amongst historians and military modellers. I fear we are a dying breed.

Welcome, Ken. Excellent job on Tabletop Simulator. I haven't checked that title on Steam recently so I'll have to give it a look.

Hi Chris. i didn't make the simulator. the devs are young californians, who seem very forthcoming with updates and new features. it was built using the unity engine, and i think one of their main goals is to bring everything you can do inside that, into their sim.

i'm pretty sure it runs on mac and linux too.

Hi Jim. it's on sale quite regularly, i think i got it for a fiver. it's the exorbitant price of 15 quid now. my friend is working on a 1:1 Prussian army for Napoleonic wargames at the moment. I also recently did a whole bunch of ACW figures and ships. for something not really designed with wargaming in mind, it does a remarkable job of facilitating it. there are literally 1000s of games that you can download for free. the art community is astounding. the user community does tend to attract a fair number of "children", but there are quite a few old salts there who remember gaming in the 60's and 70's. on the networking side, you can easily set up your own private server, if you want a quiet game with some friends.

i'm definitely a fan... but not affiliated with it. sorry if i sound a bit over zealous. i just love gaming. :)

Thanks for the clarification Ken. I've had the simulator for quite some time, but my gaming is all over the map and in summer I don't spend quite as much time on the computer. Right now I'm on a bit of a solo board game focus; Gloomhaven, 7th Continent, Blackbeard, HEXplore It, Too Many Bones, etc. Agreed, I love gaming as well. Currently watching a lot of blog coverage of the UK Games Expo in Birmingham.
