Default Age of Sail 2 - data and texture overhaul

    Hello :)

Seems this is the only forum section a new user can post something.

I come more from a background of modding and 3d modelling, but with perpetual fascination with the sailing warfare.

Anyway, some time ago I began to tinker with the old Age of Sail 2: Privateers Bounty game, making modifications to database, replacing textures on various models to give more realistic, as it was possible at the moment, vision. And then I almost accidentally discovered a way to insert completely new textures into the game.

    That gave me a kick.
The game itself, despite being very old, features a very flexible database, a set of models, scenario editor, even a possibility to command a single ship or a squadron, while other ships on the same side are driven by AI (which is not the brightest, but quite competent), decent sailing mechanics, a bunch of land maps with forts and what not. If it had an ability to fetch the ship to, or make boarding by boats it would be almost complete 18th century naval warfare simulator. The ships themselves consist of hull model, and configurable masts and sails, so new types may even be altered.

So I experimented with coloring historical profiles and setting them on the models already in the game (no way to change those, unfortunately, unless the archive and 3d format is determined somehow):

    Hi Martes.
At the moment we are having Server problems and will not be able to process your application for site membership until next week. You should then be O.K. for posting. I will Pm you when all is back in order.

    Thanks :)

Since the situation does not seem to resolve, I think no harm will be in posting some new screenshots here in the meantime?

Oh, I haven't written for some time, but those issues miraculously sorted themselves out.

i saw an old message from you. they were .PAK files, yeah? how did you open them in the end?
did you learn anything useful from the internal stuff, or was it purely textures and models?
are the models in any particular (useful) format? can they be edited/improved?

From the last post - the problems with importing new models were completely resolved, so I have produced a number of ships with I hope satisfactory level of detail for this very aging engine (~2k triangles per hull model), and they work quite well:

Additionally, I have opened a page on Moddb:

    https://www.moddb.com/mods/privateer...odel-overhaul/

And there is a link to quite extensive AARs I played and posted on another forum (my deepest apologies, but it's very difficult to duplicate those posts).

On a side note, there is - with file formats sorted out - technically a possibility to write a framework that may enable dynamic generation of scenarios and maps, but I definitely won't be able to pull it out all by myself.

    Hi Martes.

I don't know if this is of any interest but, Aaron is doing some work on the same sort of thing with his game design.

Only one query: Can you reassure me that what you are doing complies with the End User License Agreement for the game?

    Thanks

    Rob.

I am definitely aware, moreover, he is doing exactly the part I lack in a way (the map generator), and, possibly, some cooperation may be possible, but i am not sure how :)

I have no idea, really. First of all, both companies, the developer and the publisher, are long defunct. The game was released around 2002.
Second, all the models and textures I do are totally made from scratch and by myself, so I see no point of conflict.
Third, as far as I know, there is a very large modding community for other, newer games (the pirate RPG series) based on this engine, and they some of them were (when the developer was still active) quite embraced by it.
And finally, it is completely non-commercial.

Thanks for your quick response Martes.
Your assurances are simply required to clear the Anchorage of any legal quibbles at a later date.

    Of course.

Anyway, the models - and I do hope to make a whole line of them, with at least one representative for each type of ships - may be more versatile than just for this game (although, they work there wonderfully, and the game conveys the age of sail naval operations experience very accurately), and could be used under different engines - but I don't image in can write one in any foreseeable future.
