    Default Construction of Fort Niebla.

With Manzanera Island in the spray shop, I decided to crack on with Fort Niebla.
Here I was lucky in two respects. There was an 18th century plan and I had enough parts left from the San Pedro build.

Scaling up the plan I fitted the parts which needed little fettling over the plan.

Next I cut a plasti-card base to the shape of the fort plan and assembled the parts

The next job will be fitting and gluing the walls in place.

By lunchtime today I was at the stage of gluing base to the terrain. Should be ready for an all over PVA seal tonight.
Meantime I will position the forts guns and start to paint the village.

Overnight I applied a stiff layer of PVA to the whole model excepting the beach.

Once dry I undercoated in my usual mid brown.

Now it's time to get on with the village.

    Rob.

Well here's the end of the jolly old process. Town painted and glued down.
Just a windmill and church on their way from the supplier to add.
Now its off to the shop for a first coat of varnish overnight.

I set up the Approaches to Valdivia this afternoon so that you could see the final layout with the three principal forts in position. Remember also that there are the forts Amargos, San Carlos and Ingles as well as a couple of lesser batteries further downstream.

The Business of the commander-in-chief is first to bring an enemy fleet to battle on the most advantageous terms to himself, (I mean that of laying his ships close on board the enemy, as expeditiously as possible); and secondly to continue them there until the business is decided.

Excellent diorama, Rob. When it is finished it will be great.

What a great work Rob! Especially I like the works of external defenses excavated in the terrain.

That is what I like about the high density foam. You can render it rough terrain, but with a router you can give it a fine finish to very close tolerances.

How do you do your roads/paths? It looks like they are painted over the grass?

Do you have a 3D printer to make the buildings and fort with?

Roads are either painted over the grass as you say Dobbs, or if sunken lanes as in the one leading from the Fort through the Glacis I rout it in before the sealing stage.

    Morning Daniel.
As you may notice from the construction here, the fort is made from parts. I used the Brigade models to source this one. Their Star fort and harbour for the other walls. I had used part of the Star fort previously when I made the Island fort, and this one was simply the leftovers from that. Julien also produces some very superior fortifications which I also use in cases whee the historical size and shape are less critical. His are based on Historical fortifications but can be easily adapted if necessary. Some smaller works I scratch build using a variety of media such as plasticard, milliput, foamcard etc.

You started to make the forts grey too?

I made mine grey to emphasis it as a fort even though outside of granite country they most often were of a more beige complexion.

I remember you making your forts more "correct".

    Going for authenticity.
Here are photos of Corral St. Pedro and Niebla, Jonas.
As you can see only Corral is light sandstone.

    Thanks Chuck,
I am hoping to do the encounter on the 28th of April at Hammerhead, so a couple of days after that you should see the result.
