Default First Solo play (Enemy in Sights)

Finished my first solo play - using the Enemy in Sights scenario.

    HMS Terpsichore against Courageuse

Courageuse ended up striking due to damage. Photo shows position at games end. I am sure I messed up a rule or two along the way - but it was fun. I look forward to reading more rules and playing again.

Nice to see tour ships in action Jerome.
Don't worry about messing up the odd rule, even we old hands miss out the odd thing now and again in the heat of action. The main thing is that you enjoy the game. i look forward to seeing more of your exploits in the future.

To quote Napoleon...'He, who in War, has made no mistakes, has not made War very long' !
In games, mistakes and omissions do happen, as Rob says, so long as it doesn't stop the fun, don't worry!

    Happy Sailing!

Welcome to the solo gaming! A good victory. I shudder to recall the number of times my ships have been sunk by admiral Paper Movement Chart. It is a testament to the quality of the rules and the thought of the designers.

We all await your reply and report with baited breath Jerome.
We are as desperate for more AARs as the Spanish were for the arrival of the yearly treasure fleet.

Speaking of treasure fleet. Arriving today was boxes of goodies. My book about Pellew and 7 additions to my small (4) starter set plus two ships. Now at 13 and ready to start some standard rules.

Watched the Detroit Red Wings hockey game tonight, so maybe pics tomorrow.

    Default Second Solo Play

Scenario: AQUILON & UNITE were holding station as HMS VANGUARD & HMS MELEAGER attempts to break the blockade.

VANGUARD and MELEAGER sails through the harbor and islands to meet the French.

Photo below shows VANGUARD and MELEAGER putting the finishing blow to AQUILON. In the background you can spot the remains of UNITE. The battle was close and not for that slew of "0's" the VANGUARD and the British victory may have been for not. I used the back of my Wings of Glory mats to play. I plan to advance to the standard rules on my next play.

I have been enjoying my play, so I made an amazon order - see below.

Rob - I do believe I will enjoy the book, thanks!

I have added the following to my starter kit, CONSTITUTION and ARGONAUTA.

    Added:
    Spanish - SIRENA
French - ALLIGATOR, CARMAGNOLE and ORIENT
British - SWAN and QUEEN CHARLOTTE
    American - THORN

Still waiting on HMS CONCORDE. I have also identified 6 more.

Any suggestions on some the accessories to add more flavor to the game? Thanks!

The terrain mats Coasts and shoals, and Coastal batteries are well worth getting Jerome, even if you eventually intend to make your own in 3D. They provide a good guide for shapes and sizes.

Your second game looked like a close run thing Jerome. As indeed all well balled scenarios should. You will be well pleased with a close victory, but not as ecstatic as the first time that you win in the face of what appeared to be insurmountable odds. I well remember my first victory with a Frigate against a 74.
On the other hand I well remember my series of losses against Mrs Bligh or Simon and his Pirates.

A suggestion for you, I found that putting some sort of backing sheet/card on the ship mats is a good idea, this helps the ship log fit better and not slip underneath if it receives a knock. Also the cards have a backing to rest on also.
    I used card on mine.

Can you let me know what thickness of card you used Chris.
I intend to do mine the same as yours. It's an excellent idea to stop things getting knocked off.

Can you send a photo of the backing cards ( not sure I fully understand).

My recent order arrives Saturday... can't wait...

    Hi Jerome,
    This is what I mean

Rob I got the card from ebay and is A4 300gsm Kraft board from Colour vision.
I got line 1063 as closest to the mats.
As you can see I cut mine level with the size of the mat, this was to fit inside my carry case for the mats, you could cut it so the cards are backed also, it depends on what you want and your transport system.
I found these help a lot in games.

I may do mine too, as its amazing how many time ship manoeuvres put them across the log!, I can do it on the old big wings of war cards, but the sails ones are harder!!!

All will be revealed when I see if it actually works. That will depend on how long it takes for the card to be delivered.
