Non-official ships?

Hi guys...

I've seen some very nice metal ships while browsing the forum. I have to say that they appeal more to me than the official models as I'm the kind of person who likes to tinker with models, cutting, converting, painting, etc.

But how should I go about using them?

Most of the ships I've found were 1:1200, so smaller than the official ships.

And what about bases? I need the correct bases with fire arcs marked.

Not to mention, of course, needing the stats for the ship as well.

As a sidenote: Even with the official models you can have a lot of fun modifying them (Jonas for example has done some astonishing work, he was also the first who tried (and succeded) in razeeing ships).
Here are some examples of his work: Razeeing a 74 and his take on the dear old Surprise.

Here on the forum you can find anything from relatively simple repaints to completely new ship types, all with the official miniatures as a base.

So, what you're basically saying is that most people are working from the official models rather than from, for example, Langton models?

To give a more concrete example...

I'm thinking of two possibilities to do some unofficial fleets. One would be pirates, consisting mostly of smaller 5. / 6. rate ships with unrated support ('cause we all love pirates, right?), and a Danish fleet to help me avenge the humiliating defeat and the hands of the English fleet and the burning of Copenhagen.

How would I go about doing that?

I'd need stats for the ships from somewhere. Possibly just rename some of the existing ships in the game and use their stats. Although, as far as I can see this game doesn't have unrated ships. Or...?
I'd need models from somewhere. I've been looking at Langton, but their ships are 1:1200, so slightly smaller than the official ships.
I'd need bases with the correct fire arcs marked. So far I've noticed two distinct types of fire arcs, but haven't quite figured out why they're different for some ships.

They are card stock models, but they are great. I've built 7 of them- some original and some rescaled and different paint schemes. They look awesome next to the Sails models. They are cheap, realistic and satisfying to build. Have a try at 'em. I'll post some pics shortly.

I would be very interested to see some of those Carl.
Some of the chaps over on Wings have produced some incredible models of aircraft.
It will be interesting to compare them to the ships.

How did you decided what kind of base you needed for each ship?

I determined the appropriate wind attitude bases by comparing the "model" ships to those similar in size from the original Ares models. Ex: a 74 gun frigate, a 1st rate, a corvette or a post ship and a sloop. I did the same for the ship logs and maneuver decks while using Wikipedia to fill in the info for stat cards.... I'll post those too.

If you are skilled to perform conversions as Jonas, I recommend you use boats Sail of Glory and sails and masts from Langton. If otherwise not want to complicate you can use perfectly hulls from Langton, you have to make a base with measures from Sail of Glory and go. You will also have to draw the fire arcs but that is no problem.

In principle nothing happens if you use ships from Langton, you simply have to put them on the basis of Sail of Glory and enjoy. The size difference between ships of scale 1/1200 and 1/1000 is minimal. But the important thing is that the bases have the right measures.

Been a long time since I thought of sailing ships. You know the drill, always busy with the stuff life keeps throwing at you...

Had a chance for another game yesterday. Four players, four ships and two sides - England versus France. Highlight of the match was the final turn where my ship, badly damaged and flooding so badly that it would sink next turn, still at full sails sailed straight between the two French ships and let off a final thundering broadside. When the smoke lifted, I had no more crew left, one of the French ships had neither crew nor hull, and the last one was setting sails for nearest friendly harbour. Sadly, my comrade-in-arms was sunk by a last long-ranged salvo (the last fired in the game) and so the hated French got away with a victory.

But man... That final broadside...

Anyway... Looking over the various ships my friend had brought, I noticed that there were different firing angles on some of them. So I was thinking...

I'm still planing to do a Danish navy. I can get the ships from Langton, but what about the bases? Is there anywhere where I can see the various kinds of bases there are, possibly with a guide as to what base fits what ship.

You can't acquire the Ares bases without purchasing the ship/box combination. A lot of folks here use the Langton bases and then mount those on an additional sheet of plastic. There are others who prefer using the clear plastic bases alone with the ships glued in place and then having the base card showing through from below.

Thanks. Some interesting ideas for sure.

However, the problem I keep coming back to is that of the wind markers and firing arcs. On the official ships these are clearly marked on the base, but since there are no official Danish ships (as far as I know, at least) I'll have to make my own. But how to do that?

I was hoping that perhaps there was some sort of guide, possibly copied from the official ships, for how the markings should be done for the various classes of ships.

Allan, HI, I use Langtons, I have around 40. I urchased from a UK company clear plastic laser cut bases to the size that would fit the SoG base. I then took from the files the bases (ie with firing arcs) that someone did for your own named ships. I printed those on clear acetate for printers. I then place these under the clear plastic base and voila I have my own Langtons with firing arc.

Say I want some line ships, some frigates, and a handful of sloops, what kind of bases would I need for them?
