Default What's on your workbench for July.

Here is the start of my July work.
    Sunken ship markers.

Good job I got these crews finished this morning, because they were certainly in demand on the mission, even the Marines..

    Thanks Hugh.
As I said there will eventually also be a couple of third Rates, and First Rates added.

Next up, the shipwreck of a 74 well on its way to becoming two sinking 74s.

I have very mixed emotions on these projects. I think that your sinking ship markers will add a huge amount to the atmosphere of the game, but it does break the heart a little to see such a fine thing chopped up!

I do know what you mean Hugh.
I had no compunction about the Frigate, because it came with broken masts, but this is the third 74 I have bought intending to cut up. With both the others I flunked out and made them into repaints. This time i vowed to cut it up the moment it arrived to stop me having second thoughts about it, otherwise I could see myself a year down the line with dozens of repainted 74s and still no wrecks.
Next in line, a ship on the rocks maybe?

The frigate has lost it's poop deck, gained a royal sail on the main mast and will be a British heavy frigate like Lively. New stern gallery started painting

The first rate is a Victory rebuild that will turn her into Royal Sovereign. It's a stern gallery swap so far.

    Well done Rob!
As an idea I propose you do the sunken ship marker of Langto, it is very funny. Personally, I would heel over masts.

That is indeed very amusing Julián and with all my spare masts could save me butchering a First Rate.
Hardly tell what ship she was as long as the mast spacing was correct.

In fact this way of sinking a ship was more frequent than we imagine. At that time there were not watertight compartments and boats don't sink like the Titanic.

It would fill gundeck for gundeck. They were all open along the length of the ship when cleared for action. It's the opposite of Titanic. There's still the risk of a large hole that could tip it over. Open gun ports just makes it quicker.

I wonder what the damage stability curve of a ship of the line looked like. There are no partitions in the ship worth talking about so if water got in it would have a horrible free surface effect. In a storm or any kind of rough sea I'm betting they would capsize pretty quickly.

I'm just trying to imagine what the cross sectional bulge below the normal waterline would do when filling up. Would it help to stabilize the tendency to capsize or just emphasize the wash of water from side to side. We all know what happened to the Mary Rose, and once those cannon break free and trundle to one side of the ship I guess all is base over apex in no time.
So some hulls are also in order then.
Anyone manufacture those in our scale?

The inside of the ship would most likely act as a giant slack tank. Most of the weight pretty low down so you would have a decent righting arm if the ship were to list. I think though as the water line is not far below the gun ports any serious listing and they would make things 100x worse and it would go down pretty quickly.
