As you may gather from my previous post

I have the absolute pleasure of running some of the participation games at shows with Chris.

Up until now when ever a ship has been destroyed in battle it is simply removed from the game without trace.

This got me thinking...in the WWI games we participate in there are markers for downed aircraft where they crashed.

So i put some thought, and subsequent action into producing some eye candy for the games...

I hope you like them...?















If they meet with the commanders approval

they may well appear in future AAR's at shows.

They look very effective and will add much to the visuals of the games and reports. However, it looks as if two frigates went down to make these.

I have a box of bits that also includes a lot of resin cast sails and spars, I think I will enlist the elves when they get done with the Lexington build . . . looking back at them I think a bunch of thread rigging could be wound around some of the bits as well . . . still way cool!

It is something that has been on my to do list for some time Simon, but with all the more pressing things has been put on the back burner for the time being.
You have produced a very useful set of wrecks there.
As Chris says, I will be looking forward to seeing them in our games. Navigating around the wreckage will add an extra dimension to the action, eh Chris.

I've made one of the "leftovers" from my Tonnant-conversions. I hope to get two more made as soon as I have time and energy for them.

Right now other things rate higher on my to-do list.

But they are soooo good to have...

Very nice! Would the markers for a destroyed ship be visual only or, as Rob suggests, actually be navigational obstructions to other ships still afloat?

There's an optional rule that surrendered ships are left on the table as obstacles if I remember correctly.

I've always left the ships on the table when surrendered. I could agree that the ships do take up too much space with wide bases, but -i like them to visually be there.

Having counters like those great ones by Simon makes sure you don't mix up which are still in play.

The ones from Litco serve as markers, but are not really photogenic enough for AAR photos.

When I was playing Axis & Allies War at Sea a lot, I used Litko everything (blasts, smoke, islands, etc)
For me it worked visually-in my mind the ships are in the foreground and everything else is background and can be more abstract. But I think most people held your point of view Herk and preferred accessories that were modelled accurately...

As with all things Fred, I go with what works for me!, the Litko markers are quite useable!

(I must confess, though, to being a bit of a snob about these things! )

With a bit of tweaking I find the Litco explosions, water splashes, Flack and burning wreckage fine in photos, because the flash reflects off the surfaces and gives them life and depth.
For simple markers, the other components are fine too, and do their job excellently. I am not knocking Litco chaps, just intimating that in my opinion, when one has gone to the trouble that we do to get accurate towns, harbours etc. the ships are not realistic enough looking for serious photographs.

I also agree about the visual apeal of models to litko.
They work ok for the WW1 game, fireballs etc and for seagames I would prefer to see modelled markers, but was pointing out if markers were needed/ wanted then Litko did have some ready made. I have not sen their sunk ship or fallen madt tokens in the flesh so cant comment as yet, I intend to get a couple for shows to see if they work.
In the mean time I hope we get to use Simons markers soon enough
