Thread: My recent hobby project

    Default My recent hobby project

    Hi all,

Since I haven't had any plastic sailing ships to buy for a while, I've put the money into buying plastic with which to make a sailing ship.

To be precise, I've been building a giant model of the sixth-rate frigate HMS Enterprize (1774) out of LEGO bricks! It is scaled to LEGO minifigures (1:38.4), so it measures about 5 feet from bowsprit to spanker boom. One thing I can say definitively is that I learned an awful lot about rigging this way!

Looks like I did manage to complete my deliverable before Ares

Little nervous putting it in front of people that know their ships, but I hope you like it!

Now that this is done, I'm ready for Ares to get the SGN ball rolling again!

This is astounding indeed! Did you do it from scratch? Its incredible! Not normally a fan of most "free - style" lego builds, but this is magnificent!

A work of art in a totally different medium Fred.
Now all you need is another ship to fight and some giant cards.

unique masterpiece...with your permission I will make LEGO attention to your work. I have been to Legoland a few times and it's obviously great, but I have not seen this before...yet
as a citizen of Legos homeland, I would be proud.

Absolutely amazing, Fred. Some well deserved rep on its way to you. When can we expect HMS Victory?

    Nice project.

This looks like a lot of work but the result is breath taking.

Yes all from scratch--but I did work off model plans for HMS Enterprize that I downloaded from http://woodmodelbuilding.blogspot.com/

I love the giant card idea--I need to start making a deck right away!

Somewhere along the line I thought it would be nice to have an opponent. I found some plans for a mid-eighteenth century British sloop that I thought would make a good USA heavy privateer for a battle diorama. But it may be a while before I have the time, energy and $ to take on another project

By all means--I love LEGO (obviously) and I hope the company would like what I've done with them

When I first started I was thinking--maybe after this I will work up to USS Constitution. But for the time being this is enough LEGO ship for me

USS Constitution in LEGO figure-scale would be very interesting indeed!

As for a "worthy opponent": Here you can see another figure-scale ship project, the USS Poseidon (although she might need some reinforcement; after all, she's still American ):

Got an answer from LEGO. They are very impressed by your very beautiful piece of work and of course they appreciate when "their fans" being creative...then they encourage you to visit the following link:

...and maybe then in the future we can buy your ship in the stores.
Once again Fred, thanks for sharing with us.

Good luck with your approach to Lego.
I once did some trials of Lego Technic for them at my school, and they sent me a great big free box of it when it was released.
May you be as lucky as I was.

As I continue to wait for wave 3... I broke out the LEGOs again to build a little friend for HMS Enterprize to play with:

    Massachusetts privateer Oliver Cromwell

    She's a topsail-cutter rigged sloop, 80 tons, carrying ten 4-pounders and four swivel-guns.

Three feet long, mostly bowsprit, I love it!
