For anyone wishing to add a little salt to their AARs I just came across this gem.

I expect that all our AARs will be peppered with obscure sayings from now on making them indecipherable to most readers.
What have I done? Was it avast mistake or a vast mistake?

Adrift, Morton, is where a boat is floating out of control.

It's only obscure if you've never heard it. Every officer aboard a ship had his or her own terms for things, and you had better learn them quick. Crews aboard ships back in Napoleonic times were French, Dutch, English, African and even American. Haband is the french word for Sheet. Haul Habands meant haul in the sheets. Every ship was different, with different terms depending on the makeup of the officers.

The link Rob posted is one of those nonsense posts trying to make sense out of British sayings from an earlier time.Don't believe a word of it.

In what way is it a nonsense post? Many of the terms used on that page and on the others accurately reflect the terminology, official or not, that existed in the RN in the 1700s and beyond.

Of course if you were writing an AAR in French you'd be using different terms
