Your next promotion will be at 50 log entries, I believe, Gustavo. These ranks are only for a bit of fun. We do not order people around or anything like that.

From my point of view, and experience on the Aerodrome, it is very important to make little asides, jokes, and welcome new members to the site. Making someone feel at home, and praising their efforts is an important factor in keeping their interest. Make them feel valued, and encourage them to contribute, no matter how small that is.
Remember, more posts means more readers, means more potential members. Those hardened salts amongst us must try to keep the cannon ball rolling.

Just popped in to say I'm not dead, but I have calculated my next promotion based on current rate of contribution to the Anchorage will be somewhere around Christmas 2078. That is to say, longevity in this forum, does not provide automatic advancement after Post Captain (not that I've reached that lofty pinnacle yet)

I can say now I begin to fully appreciate the British system of the times, where time and tide guaranteed a steady if somewhat slow rise, if you lived long enough after achieving Post, Admiral was achievable. I have the last part down pat, I plan to live a long time and up until now the plan has worked most succesfully, but it seems I may need to add something of merit to earn success...what a strange concept! Merit indeed...

I am with you there Daniel.
You are well ahead of myself in that respect, having joined at the same time. I obtained a posting to a far flung backwater of the Empire, where the chance to shine, and gain the eye of the Admiralty was not an option. On my return I find many of my contemporaries well advanced in the lists, whilst I struggle to gain command of a vessel larger than this Sloop. Oh for a Frigate!

I joined late, but made up for lost time. While I have spent some time on the Aerodrome this is home for me. Rank isn't as important as feeling you're part of a community where you can make various contributions over time.

The chatty atmosphere where we welcome some jokes and off-topic discussions do help make the Anchorage what it is in my mind.

I would miss the arguments about whether Russian ships were greenish black or blackish green if it were to become all serious.

Life has been interesting this year. One of the things I truly miss is time here and on the 'Drome. I don't play WoG or SoG nearly enough to be on these sites as much as I desire to be; it is spending time with you fine folks that had me here daily, and that I now miss.

Jonas, one more and you'll hit 1K.

Well done Jonas on your promotion!

There's been a looong debate on the colour of Russian ships. Basically it comes down to were they painted black, were they painted black that faded to a black green, were they in fact green that might have become black green with time, were they different colours in the Black sea fleet (not a joke) to the Baltic fleet, does it really matter if we're happy with how we paint our ships

like you say, it's a game! We all see thing differently, thank God! I have always said, as has Ed. That I would be very happy to put my B/W Russians and his G/B Russians together as one grand fleet and play all comers. Its a dream. Ed in U.S.A and me in U.K. Its this dream that keeps the hobby alive for me. The "Debate" is apart of the dream. Meeting (On line) friends like you all is a part of that dream too. We all try to do our best for our armies/fleets etc. To show case them on a table. So others can dream to. That is this hobby. If I can add to this hobby just a little. I'm a very happy and lucky man.
To add my little bit, I cannot change history. Peter ordered Russian ships to be painted black/white. By 1830 all Russian ships where b/w. So what happened in the middle to change this colour? If it was changed at all!

By 1830, I concur. I'm still looking for the exact date but around 1800 Paul I, emperor of Russia did give an order to standardize Russian man of war colors to black and white. One can only guess how many years it took to make the change. So for conflicts during the Napoleonic era I'm sticking with green and white.

NIVO, abbreviated from Night Invisible Varnish Orfordness (or "Night Varnish Orfordness"), was a dark grey-green overall finish applied to British night bomber aircraft in the inter-war period (1918-1939).

Developed in 1918 by the Experimental station at Orfordness, as a low-visibility colouring for the Royal Air Force it had a sheen to match that of open water on a moonlit night.

It was applied to aircraft from 1918 and was used on the Vickers Virginia, Handley Page Hyderabad, Handley Page Hinaidi, Handley Page Heyfords and Fairey Hendon bombers.

NIVO was phased out in the late 1930s, and had been discontinued by the time of the arrival of the new British medium bombers - the Vickers Wellington, Handley Page Hampden and Armstrong Whitworth Whitley.

Just remember with small scale models you should be lightening colours slightly to achieve the correct visual effect so n "pure" blacks (I tend to use Revell colour called "tar black" which is a very, very dark grey. I suppose you could also lighten a straight black with some added green......
