    Hello Fellow Shipmates,

I apologize for being away as of late. I was speaking to my Dad on the phone and I noticed his speech was slurred. I told him to call a friend and go to the ER immediately. Sue and I packed our bags and headed home to Chicago. We spent the better part of a week in the hospital from morning to night with him. Upon his release, the diagnosis was that he had either a TIA or minor stroke. The doctors - neurologists and cardiologists - and nurses were quite taken with the old guy as he is 86, still works full time, is involved in church, scouts, and the VFW (Veterans of Foreign War - Korean War combat engineer). They were amazed at how good of shape he is in, how great his brain MRI looked, etc. Most of all, they were amazed at how enjoyable he was, the degree to which he flirted with every nurse, the dialogues with friends and family. One of my cousins mentioned it seemed like my Dad wasn't phased by what happened. We spent a lot of time laughing.

The doctors put my Dad on medicine to counter spells of increased heart rate, and upped the dosage of his daily aspirin. He returns to work next week.

I am now trying to catch up with things, so outside of processing registrations, I won't be too active until next week. If there is anything I should be made aware of, please let me know.

I have missed our time together,
    Eric

It's great to hear all is OK with your Dad. There's certainly no need to apologize. Take care and return when you have time and energy.

It can be quite scary having a stroke or TIA (a mini, temporary stroke), I am so glad he is better now. Keep a good eye on him to make sure he gets immediate attention if he has any more such episodes!
He sounds like a really good chap!

    Thank you, my Friends.

I spoke to one of my sisters who is staying with my Dad this weekend. She said he is doing very well, and looks great. It wasn't easy leaving him, so knowing he is recouping as he is is a relief.

Dear Friends, I am pleased to share my Dad is doing quite well. He has returned to work, scouts, etc. My concern is that he doesn't push too hard; I never want that experience again.

That we all love you like our very own Brother and that our caring thoughts and prayers go out to your Family. You are very fortunate to have caught such a thing so quickly and preserved a quality of life your Father needs to continue touching other peoples lives. You and yours have been Blessed with a most valuable gift, more time with the one you Love. Cherish it Mr. T.

Only just seen this thread. Thinking of you all. Let your Dad fly! Don't hold him back. He is who he is. Would you want him any different? We as the "kids" can only be there to catch them, if they stumble. That is what he would do for you! Just love and enjoy your time. I know how it is. You would not wish to think back "If only!" Eric, Sue trust me. I know. It's a year now that I lost my dad. Towards the end I wish we could of let my dad fly more.

Glad your Dad is doing well Eric.
Rory is right. Being old enough to be most of your dads if not grandfathers age all I can say is, don't dare dictate what your dad can or can't do if you want to keep peace in the family. (Just speaking for myself.)

Good to hear that the "old dreadnought" is still swimming on the water, Eric.
