Default Slowly working on Venus 1783

I've started converting a Proserpine to the Swedish 44 gun (with 24 pounders) frigate. Starting from HMS Tersichore wold have been more correct in size, but who would have believed that little ship to pack such a punch?

And here you can see the dangers with modifying ships. Sometimes you sip and things go bad...

Can it be that the stern has a small mark of war?
other than that, good job Jonas!

Look at the challenge in overcoming the problem Jonas.
I bet if you had not shown us we would never know once you complete the transformation.

    Hi All and Jonas,
I must ask one thing. You spend so much time and work on your ships. Why use Sail of Glory models? Half your work is to take apart the models. Why not just buy ship models that you can make from the start? You will find better and nearer to your target ship out side Ares.

    Hi Rory,
It's probably due to my failed attempt at a GHQ ship of the line back in the nineties. I have an idea that plastic is easier to work with. Sometimes it is, but I guess you are right about closer originals being available in 1:1200 metals.

    Hi Jonas,
My history is the same. I stopped because I could not find netting in the 80's. I was going though my old stuff and found a badly painted ship with some standing rigging on it. So I stripped it and got the brass rat-lines from Langton's. Maybe if SOG was around at the time of me finding my old ships I may have gone down the same path as you. I must say I'm happy that that did not happen. I think I have been lucky in this, as it has given me a bigger aria/pool to work from.

A little milliput added. Just the other side and some paint and it will be ready for rigging.
Might even get done this year.

I haven't bought any more ships planned for a Swedish feet, but who knows.

I might just start a Swedish and a Russian fleet when I think my British and French are good enough.

Biggest problem is I would have to make big changes to the Swedish ships. The Swedish 60-64 gun ships looked a little different from the conventional smaller ships of the line. Bigger guns and less protected upper gun deck. They had less draft than others of their size and were more stable in the water due to a little different hull shape. I think I would have to 3D print those to be content.

Your thread has inspired me to start my conversion of the Constitution into one of the Bombay Dockyard Teak 40 Gun Frigates of the HEIC Bombay Marine Jonas.

Being an inspiration is high praise.
I know there's an enormous gap to someone like Julián, but my standards show what we mere mortals can do.
I need more sloops but then I want to make my own bomb ketch from your description. This is one of the things that make this site great.

The Swedish page has a little more information of her Russian service and later fate.

    Lets see if this works...

It did work. Google's translation of the page is ok.

Quite a unique sight, thanks for sharing!
I see you added a hint of aftmost copper bottom showing above the surface; that's something I'd like to experiment with in one of my upcoming repaints, too.

Yes. I've been thinking about making a ship lean over and show a bit of copper, but would then have to turn the yards from the tops. It would be very much work.

I always worry about the state of copper on my hulls.
How much immersion in salt water would be needed to make the copper on a freshly coppered ship go green?
    Anyone an idea?

    Rob:
    https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Copper_sheathing

"Unprotected copper ... would quickly go from a reddish color to a greenish color of corrosion. When the other metal was mixed in copper in ratios from 1/40 to 1/150, there was no visible sign of corrosion and minimal weight loss. " It's about the bolts but it mentions that pure copper get green "quickly". I think it would take longer in the Baltic though.

    Thank you, Chris

Thanks for the clearing up of that little conundrum. I knew about the electrolytic problem with Iron, but not that Copper was alloyed to stop the discoloration and degradation in salt water.

It's ordinary printer paper cut out with scissors and the edges painted to cover the thickness of the paper.

I think you would be better off replacing the masts and yards with a set from another manufacturer. If you are assembling them from pieces, you could do them at an angle. Can't even imagine the work it would take on the one piece mast and sails, especially with all of the extra plastic connection from the sails to the mast.

A Swallow flag is hard to do at 1-1200 scale. The Swedish flag has 3 tails, this is very hard too do. Glad you are so good at doing them Rob. This poor flag-maker found the Swedish 3 tail flag to cut, to match both sides around thread and stick too hard to do. So again Jonas, hats off! Also liked the ship model too

As Rory said, it's hard to match the sides to each other. I don't cut the swallow tails until I have glued it together. That way I have a longer side to use to align the backside to the front. Then I cut the tails and make it wavy before the glue sets.

I see that only using an overhead lamp made the copper disappear. I'm not that good at lighting a model for photography.

    Thank you for the reputation.

If you do that to paper while it's still moist from the glue you'd tear it. That's why I use scissors.
