The City of Norwich in the United Kingdom has been invaded by dragons this Summer. However, before anyone decides to lead a flotilla up the river Yare to come to our rescue, I had better explain that it is an interactive arts sculpture trail called 'GoGo Dragons!' as an attraction for tourists, an activity for children and to raise money for a children's charity called Break.

There are 84 large and 120 small sculptures made from fibreglass, I think. Each has been painted by a different artist or artists according to a theme they have chosen. The one I have shown has 'Nelson' as its theme. It is called 'GoGo Horatio'. Maps are available showing where each dragon is located. Each has a letter on its base to crack a coded message. There are sticker books available and other things. After the trail finishes in September the dragons will be auctioned for charity. This is the third such venture. The two previous ones had elephants and gorillas.

Wow, it even has the Chelengk on his hat that he received from the Turks for the battle of the Nile. I'm guessing that the right foreleg is grey because of his lack of a right arm. The red sash shows that he is a knight of the Order of the Bath. Rub-a-Dub-Dub! He got that when he lost his arm at the battle of Cape St. Vincent.

There has to be a dragon dressed as a canary somewhere. Let's see a pic, please.

    Nice project.

    The dragon looks awesome.

Has Boney his own Dragon, too?

    Very impressive Dave.
    I'm afraid I can't match that.
However, I did get this shot of one of the Bristol painted charity Shaun the sheep when we were down to see the Matthew last month.

I only post this because of the nebulous link to seafaring matters in so far as it has the SS Great Britain as a backdrop.
Hardly qualifies as an old sea sheep dog though.
There is a lot of very good charity work of this sort going on.

Of course, you're right. It happened the same year, though. The battle of Cape St Vincent happened in February, Santa Cruz de Tenerife happened in July.

That's not Gromit -- that's one of the sheep from "A Close Shave" (or perhaps _Shaun the Sheep_).

    Thanks Chris.
My cartoon recognition is not that good.
    I have amended the mistake.

There is a Canaries dragon at the Norwich City football ground. Name: Ashman-cut-out.jpg

It is named Ashman after Ron Ashman the team captain in 1962 when the team won the Football League Cup for the first time. He later became the team manager.

The Dragons were planned long before Norwich City won promotion to the Premier League.

    Cool! A great coincidence then!

Even though I am a Gunner's supporter I do wish the newly promoted teams well!

Thanks for posting the canaries dragon. That makes me hate Norwich even more. I'm a tractor boy from Ipswich (in Suffolk) and the Canaries are our arch enemies. But since they are promoted, Go Canaries. I hope they walk all over the premiership. Ron Ashman was a better player than he was a manager but I remember his remarkable FA cup run. BTW Eric, Arsenal sucks! Just a bit of friendly competition.

    LOL!

They do seem to have a knack for being in bad form at the wrong times!

I hope that Ipswich Town win promotion this year together with Hull City. I am a Yorkshireman by birth and not a fanatical Norwich City supporter.

    That's cool.

Chicago did something with cows several years back, and Bloomington did something similar with corn cobs. I know in Bloomington, local artists created each sculpture. I suggested that a friend do one and paint each kernel with a man's tie; she could have called it Ty Cobb. Shame it never materialized. I also suggested each kernel be a type of soda - Pop Corn. Another unmaterialized suggestion.

What? You've never heard of a Sheepshank knot being used in ships' rigging?

At the auction last night, GoGoHoratio, the Nelson Dragon, was sold for £3600. I did not buy it. In total the auction of all the dragons raised £369,500 for the children's charity known as BREAK.
