Default On This Day - 29th February 1812 (and 1884)

Boats from HMS Menelaus cut out the French brig St Joseph (carrying stores from Genoa to Toulon). The action, mounted at night against the ship anchored under cover of two shore batteries and troops on shore, was led by Lt Rowland Mainwaring, RN and was accomplished without any of the attacking force being killed or wounded.

Also, on 29th February 1884 Captain Arthur Wilson, RN of HMS Hecla won the Victoria Cross for his actions in single handedly defending a gun against Dervish attackers during the second battle of El Teb. Outside the scope of the game, I know, but I'm wargaming the various Sudan campaigns at the moment and so today is one of those "big days" (and Feb 29th doesn't come around all that often and needs a bit more recognition, I think :D )

A surprise attack against unprepared Sailors.

The french slept deep under the cover of the costal battery...

Hope it was a good prize for the HMS Menelaus.

It was. And after being at war with Britain for many, many years and having suffered many, many ships lost in similar situations you'd have thought the French "LFE" system might have kicked in by then :)
