    Default Pathfinder Ship Mat

They just released a reprint of a Pathfinder RPG ship mat. Something like these could make for an interesting game to use with minis, both with boarding and gunnery rules from a distance. These show various decks of a given ship. With the dry/wet erase mats or grid paper, something along these lines could be customized quite easily. Hmmm. The wheels are turning.

Origins. Hmmm. Pirates of Glory. Yeah.

With mats like these, the cost of entry into a game system would be low. You can pick up Pathfinder or D&D minis quite cheaply, and with items like this, it is quite easy to maneuver pieces, etc. They don't have the sexiness of full 3-D ships, but there are other advantages.

I've played both the Savage Tide and Skull and Shackles campaigns. I built models of the ships the players have for Savage Tide but more of a 17th century versions with guns. They were mostly to compare them size-wise.

I took some but don't get your hopes up. I never finished them.

Beware! Asking me for pictures could result in being drowned in them, since I found out how to post directly from my iPhone.

There's some battle damage and a lot of dust. I added 28 mm miniatures for size comparison.

    Thanks for sharing Jonas.
I don't mind the unfinished at all, because it takes me right back to Jamestown a couple of weeks back, when thanks to Richard and Sheryl I was standing on the deck of a very similar vessel.

Nice photos, Jonas. Even better that you have space for the larger ships and all those minis. I don't have that luxury with too many other hobbies as it is.

Great models. Last year, I played the introductory adventure "Fools rush in" for Iron Kingdoms. It involved press gangs in a harbor and individual hand to hand combat aboard ship. Here is a look at a very nice 3d rendering of the ship map supplied in the Iron Kingdoms rulebook. You don't have to go crazy over modeling. Something like this, even in 2d works fine.

Imagine a boarding action using the same concept in SOG.

Jim, I have space thanks to tops of bookshelves...

Kenneth, that is really good looking.

It really looks good to just have a printed 2D map. We did that for most of the maps in the scenarios. Paizo is excellent in providing good looking maps.

Gold, Guts, and Glory - definitely more evocative than Pirates of Glory.

Very cool, Jonas. I wish I had modeling skills. Thankfully, Sue is excited about making terrain.

Kenneth, that is exactly what I am thinking - a 2-D set of decks, 1" squares for 5', with a house set of rules for hand-to-hand combat. In the OP, I was also thinking it could be fun to do several rounds of gunnery battles in which the ships take damage to the structures and crews before the boarding begins.

Is Iron Kingdoms a rules set? That is a nice accompanying handout.

For what it's worth this is when I'd suggest bringing in some "Heroclix" figures for hand to hand and boarding actions? I don't think I'd go the 'collectible' route, but being able to customize a captain and crew for fast, fun and furious fighting would be excellent. So, Captain Brian misses with a pistol shot, but because he's an Aiming Captain he gets another shot on a zero (limited to 2); works for his ship and his hand held weapons?

These folks were at Origins and will be at Gen Con. If I find the time I'm going to try and check them out.

I think they were next to us.

Heroclix. I have only seen fantasy characters - superheroes and Lord of the Rings. Does Heroclix make anything historically oriented?

No historical figures that I'm aware of, but maybe someone should do this? Bringing younger players into the historical realms with something they can manage would be the focus. Later, you move to the more sophisticated game play? Just thinking out loud as it were. . .

I have an amazon gift card just waiting to be spent.

Jim, I am with you. Anything that can capture the folk's attention and imagination, and then use that gateway to introduce more gaming, I am all for.

A bit like D&D on a ship. Just don't venture down into the hold!

    Eric,

Consider using a hex grid rather than squares, it helps with movement. You should be able to find one on line.

A long, long time ago, I was into D&D. When we measured distance we used 1"=6'. I can see benefits of both. This sounds like a really interesting project. If you need any help, then pm me. I really like doing this kind of stuff. I don't want to interfere in your project though, but keep me in mind.

Bob (or do you prefer Bobby), I would love to kibitz with you on this. Let's shoot for next week. I have some things I need to catch up on here first.
