Thread: Build your own Victory

    Default Build your own Victory

Well the De Agostini "build your own" franchise has just released Part 1 of HMS Victory in Australia this week. I know this has been available for a long time in Europe and may have in fact finished it's subscription run by now, but I'm interested to hear of anyone who has collected these magazines/model parts and their opinions.

At over 100 issues this is an expensive undertaking, the model is over a metre long and clearly not for the faint of heart.

This is the link for the UK page of the publisher
    http://www.deagostini.co.uk/shop/sub...he_hms_victory

I see they also do the Yamato, Akagi as well as AOS Santa Ana and Endeavour.

I'm not aware of anyone who has ever finished one of these models. I am aware of a few part built ones, and I suspect the garages, sheds and lofts of Europe are littered with half built ships, Batman chess sets and other "builds each week into a......" projects :)

    1:84!

This is going to be a big one...

More than I can handle. Do they maybe have one for just a jolly boat?

It certainly is big...touch over 4 foot long (1250mm), nearly 3 foot high (850mm) and 1 1/2 foot across (450mm). Comes in 120 parts at $15A per part (eek) though part 1 was $5A which i bought because it came with a complete cannon to build. Part 2 is free if you sub and you get a "free" magazine binder, magnifying glass with alligator clips to hold pieces and a model tool kit. Needless to say by issue 10 or so you would have paid for all this "free" stuff and some. So your looking at $1800A without taking into account extra tools, paints, glues, optional fitting upgrades etc etc

So anyone got two and half years to spare on this and a wad of cash?

Oh and if we all built one we could modify the rules of SOG and do 1/84 scale gaming. Cards for maneuver would be roughly fourteen times as big (what's that about A1 size?) and you would probably need a basketball court to play on.

The kids school has a court and indoor hall we can use. So I've sorted the venue, its up to you guys to sort the models :D

Not quite on the same scale, but I do know people who have collected loads of those old Playmobil toy sailing ships and fought out big battles with them. An obvious advantage of the models being that, when you dismast an enemy you can simply take the masts off.

Lego do a nice range of Pirate Ships and accessories as well. I think there are some quite amusing movies on youtube of Lego battles, I've seen the Star wars one, another on the Battle of the Bulge but I'm sure they have a naval one ..quick search

Most of the Cons I've been to over the last several years have Lego Pirate games being played; there's suposed to be a set of published rules floating about.

    Hey Rich
Yeah easy, just a few modifications to the model should make that pretty simple to do...not!

Even at 1/48 scale that is quite a lot of B.P. if you intend to fire a rolling broardside from both sides.

Amazing show from the very HMS Victory! The most close thing we had in Spain was a floating replica of the Santísima Trinidad in Malaga harbour, not very accurate, but with restaurant, bar and a little museum. Sadly, it was sold to a private owner.
I've uploaded photos to an album: http://sailsofglory.org/album.php?albumid=42
By the way, my wife is in front of his ancestor, Cosme Damián Churruca.

Talking about collections, I only have followed one of tanks (books+1/35 kits) and it was cool. The good thing is you can start and finish each model when you want.

Like the shot of the Santissima with the stern chasers ports open.

It's great you liked it. I think my photos don't show excatly the good feeling of the replica. It was a superb afternoon for my wife and me, visiting a replica of that kind of ship, examine the old exposed objects, and having a drink near the picture of my wife's ancestor.
One point: the word is "Santísima", with only one "s" ;)
