Does anyone else have problems in the UK purchasing this accessory pack: ADDITIONAL SHIP MATS? Anyone know the reason why these are so hard to come by?

Yes i have run into this problem too. I dont know why, other than the supply seems to go from china to the US and then onto the EU, which is long winded.
This cannot be helping the games sales at all. To have such short supply in the UK is not good for the future of any wargame, afterall Nottingham is the Mecca of wargaming and the UK has one of the largest communities of wargamers being the birth place of wargaming too.
I only have 8 ships, but i only have 4 dashboards. For other gamers with larger numbers of ships this must be a bigger problem.
Sure you dont need to have them, but id like to be able to sail all my ships with them. Why buy more when you cant get the dashboards for them?

Maybe Ares have dropped them from the fleet rules that are rumoured ahead? Food for thought.

Emailed Ares Games about this and they replied saying that they have plenty of these. The problem seems to be with the retailers not ordering them. Although this doesn't make complete sense it might explain the short supply.

Maybe if Ares began selling their own product online we could get them. The only ones ive seen in the UK are being sold by scalp takers, £35 for a set is the cheapest on Amazon!
The mats are not the only product i cannot source in the UK (sea mats, etc etc), Ares need to sort this if they are to break into the UK market at all.

Totally agree with you re "scalp takers". Btw I've recently bought a 6 x 4 piece of "faux" blue leather (plastic) to use as a games mat, from a local soft furnishing retailer. The texture/colour looks well as a sea-scape, it stays flat on table, and moves very little, unlike other pieces of cloth and is relatively cheap.

In the UK, you can also get this material from Dunelm, if you have one near by

It's not just the UK... sounds like it's a matter of retailers only ordering a few at a time.

I have a scan of a ship mat, which I am planning to print out with the ships log for my merchantmen. I think its never as good as using a proper sturdy ship mat, but it will do!

I am thinking of putting the ones that you have done onto photographic paper and then gluing onto thick card stock to get the same result as the Nexus mats Rich.

Sorry, guys, I just cleaned out Cool Stuff Inc. yesterday during their Flash Sale.

Still need to find 1 empty Starter Set box (I like the extra protection for my Kickstarter Exclusives :) ), 17 more log sets, 5 more counter sets, 7 more bag sets, 16 more Capt./Crew ability decks...

I myself have just added a backing of cardboard to my ship mats.
This is to stop the individual ship logs moving about when people add counters to the logs, well thats the theory anyway.
I will post a pic of what I mean tomorrow but basically where the hole is in the mat now has a back and I have trimmed it so where the slots for the cards are there is a small lip.
I have also started to laminate the ship cards rather than sleeving to give protection at shows.
Not too sure yet if Ill laminate the manouvre decks also.

Diamond back, today I picked up some new SoG trays from Kaiser Rushforth, Ill try and get a review of the ship trays shortly.

I am thinking much the same, though I thought I might print on good card, stick another bit on the back, and laminate.

I will be entering a period of experimentation and see which solution is best!

This is a scanned ship mat with a generic merchantman log...

    I like this idea.
As I have a ship mat for every ship I own I could actually place them together permanently, and laminate the whole thing into place.

Rob, I'd agree with that... the rub is the Same Ship Different Vintage cases--I saw no point in doubling Consitution and Victory, and Bonhomme Richard will be a similar case. (I'm not yet at liberty to say, but we had to get creative coming up with a Side B for her.)

    Hi again!

I have put the Armed merchantman, Merchantman, and light Merchantman logs on base mats. They are on my album at: http://sailsofglory.org/album.php?albumid=370 I hope they are useful!

You could rename the Constitution to the USS United States, and the Victory to the Russian Rostislav.

Chris, will watch for it eagerly--I need to write up a review of my rather more "improvised" system from the craft and office stores.

Somebody really needs to teach the KR boys a remedial course on ship classification... right now we have no Second Rates which were three-deckers and not much smaler than the Firsts, only Firsts, Thirds, possibly a single Fourth depending how you count Constitution, Heavy Fifth, Light Fifth and Unrated.

I have actually several doubles for certain ships, and do not tend to worry about the ship on the reverse unless it bears different stats.
So I could quite happily do without the ship on the reverse of the cards or even mock up the backs as a copy.

As I routinely (now) wash my ships and repaint them to some extent, and having found its not too hard to make ship base cards and ships logs, I think I may just be buying more than the 2 versions of any ship model!

In case you were unaware, we uploaded files of simplified ship mats for every printed ship. We use them with wet markers at cons, FLGS, etc.

We could do additional versions with more info as desired.

You could pass her off as another battle of Trafalgar ship like her classmates, the Neptuno or Montanes.
    Disregard the above.

My bad, I was thinking of the 1798 Argonauta

Neptuno will be great. Do you happen to know if its colour scheme is likely to differ in any way, or is it just a matter of card and mat names?

REf the mats Here are mine with the backing

    Standard

    With backing

    With insert

    With Laminated ship card

    Stood up

Hopefully this will stop the accidental moving of the ship log itself and having to re-arrange the counters.
I will know more in a couple of weeks when I try out

Sorry Rob, my bad, I was thinking of the 1798 80 gun Argonauta. Back to the drawing board

But it seems that Ares thinks you could use the 1806 Argonauta/1808 Heroe for any Téméraire Class ship-of-the-line.
If I'm wrong I hope someone corrects me soon.

You are OK then ED because the Argonauta is the other side of the ship mat. Was Neptuno an 80 then?

There was a Spanish 74 called Bahama.
Another was called the San Juan Nepomuceno.

Having now done some research on my Neptuno I came across this site. Have any of you seen it before?

    Neptuno.

The Montañés were a class of four ships of the line designed and built between 1792 and 1798 by Julián Martín de Retamosa for the Spanish Navy
The four ships in the class, and their fates, were:

    • Montañés (1794) - ran aground in 1810.
    • Monarca (1794) - captured by Britain at the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805 and later lost in the storm.
    • Argonauta (1798) - captured by Britain at the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805 and later sunk in the storm.
    • Neptuno (1795) - lost in the storm after the Battle of Trafalgar.

Neptuno was an 80-gun Montañes-class ship of the line of the Spanish Navy. She was built in 1795 and took part in the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars. She fought with the Franco-Spanish fleet in the battle of Trafalgar, and was wrecked in its aftermath.

I found a nearly perfect cloth remenant in a fabric shop. I wanted it for a scenario with my 1/200 scale HMS Glorious (WGS) that would accommodate a 47" long model. This remenant was 60" square, and $5 Cdn. When I went to BottosCon, and Troy offered to run a Sails game, using the cloth was a no-brainer.

Yes, Rob. It's a wonderful site although it's been up and down over the last few years. I used it for my Santisima Trinidad build as well as some other Langton builds. Others here have linked it as well.
