    Default HMS Victory

i don't think we've seen a painted and rigged HMS Victory. As my replacement Victory arrived Friday I painted the one with the flagpole broken off.

Very Nice, Jonas!!! I get my V & C on Tuesday and can't wait till then!!! Things kind of got put on hold for a couple of weeks around here due to the passing of the senior member of our group, and we're just now getting things slowly back on track.

    Same for me, Darell.

I've got the HMS Royal Sovereign at the moment.

If I buy the HMS Victory, I need another Ocean class...

About the extra level of detail that was promised for these ships I think I found them by painting the masts. The sails are a little finer sculpted and the fighting top of the main mast doesn't extend to the sail as on the 74:s. The sails aren't as bulging as on the other ships and seam thinner. Then there's the guns on the quarterdeck extending through the ports in the sides instead of just being sculpted on the deck and not even matching the ports as on the other sculpts. I'd say they actually increased the level of detail on the Victory as promised.

Don't worry Sven. The battles were seldom even.

Do remember, at its peak the Royal Navy owned fully half of the entire Western World's warships...

Very nice, thanks for the pictures!

Blue is what the original model is lacking! ( not only talking about the front of the forecastle but especially your blue window glass is looking great!)

The first thing I changed about my Victory though was painting the small, rounded "roof"-area above the side gallery windows black (don't know if it's historically correct but in yellow it looks like the whole stern is a completely seperated part, not really connected to the rest of the hull):

In photos of the real ship it looks gray, but most models seems to have painted that roof black.

That will probably get painted now...

I don't know if anybody on the forum has pointed this out before, but SOG ships have these weird "double yards". I guess that the intent was to show the studding sail booms tied above the main yards, as they stick out farther on the top yard than on the bottom, just like the HMS Victory has today. If that is the case, the upper yard should be painted light brown and the lower yard, black. I would leave the center section of the upper yard black to make it look like the studding booms are two separate yards lashed to the main yard. Most ships never carry their studding booms stored on their yards. They haul them up from below decks and lash them to the yards if needed. The only reason for tarring a yardarm is to prevent rot from constant exposure to the elements. The studding booms were usually stored below and were not tarred.

I've done so on the Juno / Castor model.

You can see it in this thread:
AAR Against the Wind The hard lot of the Service

The French 74s (the merchantmen) are painted with different mast colours too. Perhaps I'm too liberal with mast differences but conservative with the booms...

I checked pictures of the real HMS Victory and indeed the booms are very yellow but also very thin compared to the yards. When I painted them yellow on HMS Castor and since we look at the models from above they're a little distracting from the overall look. Agreed that I used a very bright yellow on Castor and Victory has a more subdued yellow, but what is your opinions on painting those booms in contrasting colour as yellow or "wood"?
