Default Actual color of ''yellow'' ships

    Cheers!
Since I have two of the new starters so I'm re-painting all the four ships of one of them after the ships on the old-starter
I've noticed all ships are ''yellow'' and I wonder if that ''yellow'' should be 'actual yellow' or if it was just an easy way for Ares to re-create a light wood colour (some Albatross D.III and D.V in Wings of Glory are ''yellow'' when they should be wood-grain).

So that is my question for you naval experts: should I re-paint my ships in yellow or, say, raw-sienna or yellow-ochre? (for re-creating wood-like collor I usually print in white and then paint with a mix of raw-sienna and yellow-ochre oils for a light-wood look; toast-sienna for a darker wood-collor).

    Any thoughts? :)

these are the ships I want to paint my minis after:

    Hi,
I use a base of ochre and after I use a yellow wash, finally I use light yellow to paint details. But I don't recommend you use only yellow.

    Gracias Julián!
Great looking ships btw. Are they Are's or something else?

Am I correct assuming you use raw-sienna for those ships that have a light-brownish ending and burnt-sienna for those with the darker-red-brown one?

If yes, what color do you use for washing afterwards?

    Gracias otra vez

I use Ares hull but I use Lagton ( sails, mast, ratlines and mask)
Last year I made a little tutorial about a conversion ship, I add the link:

The colors I use are of three different brands:
Game Color, Model Color and Citadel.
To paint the deck, I use:
    First: TAU LIGHT OCHRE (CITADEL)
Second: ink wash Charred Brown (GAME COLOR)
Third: I light the TAU LIGHT OCHRE (CITADEL)
Fourth: I light with Bronzed Flesh (CITADEL)

    To paint the guns:
    First: any metallic color
    Second: black ink
Third: dry brush with any metallic color but a clearer range as above (not mixed with white)

To paint the side of the boat:
    First: TAU LIGHT OCHRE (CITADEL)
Second: ink wash Charred Brown (GAME COLOR)
Third: I light the TAU LIGHT OCHRE (CITADEL)
    Fourth: YRIEL YELLOW (CITADEL)

I use the black color of the brand Model Color because it is matte and does not give any shine to ship.

    Mil gracias otra vez :)

    Very impressive Julian.
Those are some of the best painted ships for their size that I have ever seen.

Back in War at Sea days, a boardmate had a formula for killer natural-wood decking which might help you. Bear in mind, this was in about half the scale... I'd venture that the four ships you picture are meant to be yellow-ochre, while HMS Bellona is probably closer to a "clear-varnished natural wood" finish.

Yellow Ochre is the most correct color, as is Red Ochre for most red sided ships! As DB mentioned, some ships were also plain varnished wood, so it would have a more Aged Oak color tint!

The decks would have a tinged grey shade to them.

FWIW, if you can find Brian McKay's "Anatomy of the Ship" volume on HMS Bellona, I think the artwork on its cover is what Ares was going for. Needs a little blue added in some places, but you can tell that as the first of the "main-stage" Slade Common 74 family they wanted to clearly show her as an earlier ship.

    Gracias Julian.

One last question: Langton models are 1:1200 if I'm correct ... will ratlines for that scale fit the 1:1000 Ares' one too?

Yellow, what yellow? Pick a yellow you like, I think you would be right. Just go for the one yellow for each ship. I do it works, You can add the odd wooden colour too.
