Default Hermione in the news again.

Lady Bligh came across this on the early morning news, whilst I was still in my bunk.

The wife and I have gathered a group of our friends to be on hand to welcome the Hermione when she arrives to visit Yorktown in June.

There are already plans for a lot of activities as she makes her transit through Chesapeake Bay and up to the York River. She'll receive a welcome Salute from Ft. Monroe, as well as Naval Station Norfolk as she passes. It will be a once in a lifetime chance, and somewhat different from the usual Tall Ship visits we get around here to be sure!!

A good friend of ours, and a fellow wargamer who works in Colonial Williamsburg portrays both Napoleon and Lafayette! I think he will be participating in all the fun!

I can't wait for it to come to New York City. Because I live in Staten Island (NYC) and the ship has to pass my Island. I just have to keep an eye out for it.

Great project I heared about before.

I hope they have enough money and volunteers to keept this ship in a good condition.

Question is when HMS Victory will leave Portsmouth to intercept this frigate and wether USS Constitution will leave the US East Coats to join the battle.

Thank ou for those links, comrades.

Yeah, but Old Ironsides will someday feel water on her hull again--I'm not sure Victory *can* be put back to ready-for-sea.

It is a shame the Constitution just went in for over haul, as it would be so great to see the two of them take a spin around Boston Harbor together!!

    Thanks Jonas.
Those breeches actually came from Jas Townsend in the States. Wig is a Barristers cast off, and the rest of the kit including her gown is made by Lady Bligh.
Good one about the passports. They seem to want the moon on a stick these days before you can get a renewal.

You and the Misses would very much look the part on the wharf!!

Of course, if you travel in costume when asked for a passport you could just give them a quizzical look and ask; "What's this passport you ask of?"

Never make fun of anyone in US customs. There are people that have been forced to turn back for making a joke.

When visiting USA I went up to the customs and handed my passport over to a black woman over the counter. She asked the purpose of the visit so I said "To visit my mother." She looked in the passport and said "You haven't visited her in five years? That's no way to treat your mother." and she told me off. I didn't even dare to say that she had visited Sweden several times in between. I just agreed.

Judging from the map posted on their web site it looks like she'll be following the Southern route from the Azores towards the west Indies before taking the turn north towards the Chesapeake, so the winds this time of year should very much be in her favor!! Of course she's timed her arrival Stateside right at the beginning of hurricane season, so that should prove to be a challenge for the crew! Especially considering how the Bounty was lost last year during a storm!!

Yes, that was an unfortunate tragedy. All the warning signs were there well in advance, and those tall ships carry modern navigational and communication equipment. The Captain was flagrantly disregarding the warnings left and right, and being too headstrong (or foolish) refused to sail her into nearby port when the opportunity was there. Instead he figured on sailng around it by going further out, and ran headlong into the epicenter of the storm, with a greenhorn crew.

I saw the same the first time we flew out of Ghana. A well-to-do older Ghanian couple apparently thought they were much more than the lowly Ghanian personnel at the airport. As we were walking down a corridor to our plane, they were standing aside while an official was removing every article of clothing, holding each one up for all to see. Another young official stood there looking at the couple with a face that still sends chills down my spine.

The two best phrases I learned in the military were "Yes (No), Sir" and "Yes (No), Ma'am".

Actually she was already in port in New London when the decision was made to sail around the storm. Had he stayed on the easterly course they may have made it too, except inexplicably he turned back westward and crossed into the path of the storm. Ironically the Captain's own advice on storm chasing was to stay out of the path of a hurricane. AFAIK some of the crew and the mates did have experience at sea.

Mutiny? Pretty harsh - from what I read the crew loved their Captain and stuck by him through the investigation. Here is a good article from some of the crews perspective:

    http://www.cnn.com/interactive/2013/03/us/bounty/

"All 14 surviving crew members testified. Not one leveled any criticism at their shipmates or at Walbridge. They loved their captain. They trusted his judgment. They sailed into a hurricane. The ship rolled over. A cherished shipmate died and the man they called Captain Robin remains missing."

    More like 30 ft. waves.

The investigation found the Captain and owner negligent but part of the focus was the condition of the ship. Bounty was in no condition to whether a major storm and the story above illustrates this point.

Turning this thread back to L'Hermione for a moment. She has been averaging just over 6 knts on the crossing. You can follow her progress here:

According to the Coast Guard wave and seismic measuring buoys located in the area, tidal surges were recorded at their limits at times reaching an excess of 150 ft high, essentially tidal waves at sea, base waves were 30-50 ft high seas. The Coast Guard Commander declared the storm was immeasurable at times and he has never seen such a storm in all his years at sea. The crew later recended their accusations toward the Captain, as they were inexperienced, and were afraid of accountability issues, heck here in Lake Huron we get 20 plus foot squalls during storms just 10 miles out, and 6 to 8 foot regular seas just beyond the break wall.

Sadly, even in the Final Report filed by the Coast Guard it was never fully explained why the Bounty had been running on engines on a Westerly course for a number of hours prior to her loss rather then on the Easterly course she had filed before leaving port! Last I heard her masts are still sticking out of the water, as the owners have yet contracted to have them cut down. Otherwise, she is now marked by the Coast Guard as a navigation hazard where she set down in the soft bottom keel down! The U. S. Navy sent divers out to check on her current condition a few months ago, but they haven't released any info on what they found out.

It was a sad day indeed. Not only at the loss of life, but also the loss of a beautiful ship with a historic past.
