    Default On the Gundeck.

Here are a trio of cannon which I have produced over the last few decades, plus my growing collection of cannon balls. Unfortunately a bit too large for our vessels.

And here we see the problem with accurate aiming of carronades and why sighting technology kneecapped the RN from what it could have been: "Sight Along the Barrel" only works if you have either a straight barrel, or a lip at the muzzle that swells out to the breech diameter--the conical shape of a carronade means top-sighting will be high, and side-siding will miss to that side--the ideal would have been a periscope mounted along the top, but a simple sight-rail like used on some shotguns and target pistols would have worked too and been a lot cheaper.

and beautiful they are too up close, which I have had the privilege of seeing first hand. Mind you that small cannon ball would demolish any ship up close and personal Rob (mini of course).

    Hi All,
Cannon balls can cut and brake things on the target ship. Sometimes they hit a soft person, but it is the splinters the balls make that hurt the people most. Not nice

If you're firing a carronade, and you're far enough away that it can possibly miss, you're doing it wrong.

Not entirely accurate... the carronade's handicap is not the gun range itself, but the ability to aim it--due to tighter tolerances and reduced windage making better ball-barrel fits, when fitted with better sighting systems carronades could keep up with and even outperform traditional guns At Range.

Personally, I want holes in the other guy's hull to be his first warning I'm even there, and preferably very precise, directed hits to leave him dead in the water while I circle outside his range and make him waste his ammo. "You guys can either strike, or drift until you all starve..." in an equal or smaller ship, targeting the steering first and then powder magazine on a larger.

Yes, I'm one of those Sniping Bastards that Nelson so thoroughly despised... if surgical strikes against specific enemy leaders keep more of my men alive, and encourage the enemy to cease resistance sooner, then I've saved lives on both sides rather than more senseless and avoidable slaughter.

    Very nice work, Rob.

    How did you produce them?

The standard cannon were turned and bored out of a chunk of solid brass Eric.
The carriages are cut from oak offcuts.
The Carronade was a bit more complicated because I had to mill the lug and brackets and then hand file the radii, plus silver soldering to the underside of the barrel.
The Tommy bar on the elevating screw also had to be silver soldered in and of course the screw threaded.
One day I will get around to adding the wheels under the rear of the traversing platform.

    Thank you Admiral.
But remember that I was in light engineering before I became a teacher, and then spent the best part of 40 years teaching Design Technology, so I should be reasonable at metalworking.
It's not really very clever of me at all really. Just a lot of practice. Can I caulk a seam? Hell no!

I did smile at that Eric.
Not quite the same story as mine, but with some similarities. I almost flunked out because in my final year I discovered a passion for photography and spent many hours developing photos in the Dark Room which should have been used doing my Thesis. It was only by working flat out through the Christmas and Easter recess that got it in on time.
Eileen and I did meet at College, and the rest as they say is History, literally.
