    Default Ships of Jack Aubrey

I found this site about the ships of Jack Aubrey. Gives descriptions and plans for the real life ships that are comparable to the fictional ships of Aubrey.

In addition to the books listed, "The Frigate Surprise" published a couple of years ago (Brian Lavery and Geoff Hunt) is excellent and recommended for anyone interested in this area.

Geoff Hunt was the artist who painted the iconic covers to the books of the series.

Using contemporary and modern plans, drawings and paintings it examines the design and actual/fictional service histories of the ship.

It seems a wonderful book from the cover but, as all the large format illustrated books, its cost a lot of euros (I found it at more than 150 euros!). Not a surprise....

Wow! I picked mine up for a tenner! Wish I'd bought more as an investment now :)

Ah, but seek and ye shall find - on Amazon for just under twenty quid :)

    Please, don't exaggerate!

I found this price on the same site:

    http://www.amazon.com/Frigate-Surpri.../dp/0393070093

179 dollars are more than 157 euros!

I'm really happy for you of this special price, really a special price as you can see.

As a Christmas present from my wife mine was even better value :)

Be especially careful with the "second hand and out of print sites" - even if a book is still available at cover price there will always be internet sites charging silly money.

The internet is a chancy area to get these kind of books unless you luck onto an obvious bargain via Amazon or similar.

    Good luck !

PS This is why you will find these sort of high prices on the internet - very often they don't have the book at that price, but once they have an order they get it themselves from other internet sources and then pocket the difference.

PPS Do forgive David's gentle teasing on the Euro, having visited several colleagues in Europe lately I realise this is a big issue for you. For me, I am waiting until the Summer when I visit France to buy my next big Jean Boudriot book. So far this year it will cost me 20% less than this time last year - so much for eliminating currency speculation ! We Brits are naturally very suspicious of the Euro project - good politics sometimes makes for bad economics....

Another book that might be of interest is The World of Jack Aubrey by David Miller. It is a light read with lots of illustrations and tables. It is also a good book for novices on the subect of naval life during the Napoleonic area as well as a good compliment to the Patrick O'Brian novels.

Do forgive David's gentle teasing on the Euro,
lol, just returned from a series of meetings in the Netherlands where our Dutch colleagues asked if we'd like them to pay for some work we are doing for them in guilders :) One of the great things about working with the Dutch - they have the same sense of humour as we do :D

If it had been managed properly it would be OK. Unfortunately the Keystone Cops seem to have been in charge of its management in recent years.
