So have to pull out copy of Great Sea Battles (40 years old) to come up with some good battles. Hope there are some small ones in there.

Forty years is as nothing compared with two hundred from the period where the game takes place. I should study some basic tactics like "rung on the T".

First tactic I am going to learn is "Don't get your timbers shivered!"

It's something you are talking about when you are loosing war and your units are retreating :)

One joke from Czechoslovakia during WWII: Which is the different between Edwin Rommel in Africa and watches? No difference - he is still retreating and said "I am a tactician." (in czech "taktik") and watches still go ahead and do "tiktak" :)

Don't forget the first release covers the Napoleonic wars (and surrounding events), so if you push it then really only 30-40 years. Whilst the rule mechanisms will work fine for earlier (and later) eras the models and their characteristics in the initial releases won't.

As far as decent battles are concerned - plenty (hundreds) of frigate actions which is where I think this game system will excel.

The first lesson i learned in naval warfare!:) Never run aground, as this sometimes sinks your ship.:( I learned that from watching an opponent run aground and dismast his ship!:D
The second lesson, was the correct amount of sail in every wind condition.:) Never ever put on every stitch of sail up in a hurricane off the Virginia Capes.:D One lucky little 24lb shot could dismast you. When you command one of the Kings ships and you end up surrounded in the James River it could embarrassing! He could have run aground you know!:p
The third lesson was learned in WW2 naval games! Never ask to use the optional range estimation rules, if you cannot estimate range! The Battle River Plate lasted three turns the first game, Brits 1- Germans 0. Two turns in the second game ,with the same results. Tactical note! When you play on a 12 foot long table and your ships start 6 inches in from the edge, your first shot should be above 10 feet.;) After all you cannot count on your opponent rolling badly every time!:p

Running aground is generlaly not recommended (unless you are in a hovercraft, and even then it can be dicey!). However, some of my most "fun" experiences at work have come as a result of someone else putting a ship on the rocks. Range estimation? Ugh! A horrible game mechanic. I played in an RE game once where the ref took great delight in winding up players who couldn't estimate very well (and this a WW2 game where, for example, my ship in real life had several very well designed optical rangefinders AND a couple of radar fire control sets) - I argued that, as the ship's CO I had a gunnery team and a gunnery officer who sorted that stuff out for me. He got a bit peeved though when I suggested that, despite having helmsmen and engineers, players should also define rudder angles, boiler pressures and rev on the propellers rather than just being able to move their ships as they wished :)

I see running aground. Check out the Honda Point Disaster. 1928 in California. I know not this era but a good read and lesson.

Just scanned a copy of the Order of Battle for Lake Erie. List the American and British squadrons by name of ship and number of guns. In the photo album 1812.
