Default Home-made Sails of Glory map. Download link inside

Made this up by myself. It should get printed on 90x120cm venyl. I wanted to make it look like an empty sea-chart. What do you guys think?

Download links further down in the thread.

Wow! Great idea! When I play we often have the table littered with ship logs, piles of cards, cups and bags of chits, beer and pretzels, and it dosnt look like sea anymore. That way, it would more closely resemble a captain's cabin table, with map, and rulers and papers whil charting the battle plan. For me it has an undeniable appeal.

Have you thought about vintage-map-style terrain pieces? They could be a nice complement.

Is it important to you to have wind attitude lines? If so, you might want to add those. Personally, I like the look you have.

The mat looks great. While playing a game I'm sure I"d feel like someone pushing ships around on an operational map.

    Thanks!
I'll guess I let it print next month and see how it plays.

I guess thats the final version. Or I I don't know what to change anymore.
If there is interest, I can upload the file on mediafire.

Looks very nice, and I like the idea of a sea chart. But how to you plan to print it. 90x120 is a quite large size for any normal printer

I just bring the file to a company that does banners and truck covers. They just print it on vinyl for about 30€.
I have done a Wings of Glory one based on a scan of a 1917 trench map this way allready (And have made another one, I want to print on the backside of this). You can write with removable marker pen on them, spill coke, beer, 30 year single malt scotch and chianti over it.

The mat looks fantastic. I'd certainly upload the file. If folks have the correct software I would imagine they could resize it to print smaller? I don't know how large the local copy shop goes on custom printing, but I do know they print banners, posters, etc.

    She looks great, Tilman.

This year at Origins, I want to use a large mat instead of four Ares mats - much easier regarding set up and transportation. The WoG games use large ones; the guys tape them down the first day, and forget about them until the end of the convention. I like that - no shifting either, i.e. gaps forming between separate mats.

    Uploaded it.
Changed the text in the upper left to "Carte Nautique du Atlantique / Region Cap Vert / 1802 / Peintre: Joe des Bananas".

No idea what I could write in it instead.

I'd actually looked around for something that looked like an old sea chart and didn't find anything.

I couldn't find any seacharts that suited a game mat. Thats why I did this.

I am trying to do a bigger version of the above map (90cm X 180cm).
Does anybody has a link to a nice appropiate hi-res b/w drawing I could put in a corner for the background? A Kraken, Mermaid, Anchor, Cannon etc.

    Good afternoon Tilman.
Certainly has that old ships chart look about it, without too many Mermaids, Sea Serpents, and sinking ships. Although I'm sure that the chaps will soon alter the latter.
I like the cut of your jib my fine fellow, and your chart even more.

    Here is the bigger version.
    The PNG-file is 7654 × 3827 Pixel. I made that big to look reasonable good in 90 x 180cm.
I made the overall map a bit darker and the patches and stains a bit lighter. In the top right corner are roman numbers from 1-39. You can mark whatever you want to by placing a token on them.
I intend to print this double sided. The other side will be a Wings of Glory map.
I'll put the link to the thread in the Wings of Glory Forums in here aswell, maybe someone (probably) plays both games like I do.

    Preview for Sails of Glory:

Download link for the 90x180 map: >Mediafire link for 90x180 file<

Link to WoG-Thread: WW1 trench map

I recomend printing on venyl used for outdoor-banners. Its weather proof and you can write with a marker pen on it (no permanent one of course....).
If someone might to add / remove / change something. Tell me, I see what I ca do.

    That looks great, Tilman.

With the Roman numerals, what do you thinking of putting the "X" spot on the second row with the "XX" and "XXX" spots?

You can mark whatever you want with two tokens.
    I-X for 1-10
    Xx for 20s
    Xxx for 30s.

    Rounds, points, doritos...

I think Eric meant physically moving the "X" down on the same line as "XX" and "XXX".

And the mat looks gorgeous by the way. Very impressive. I wonder how much Office Depot would charge to print this.

Exactly. That way, there is a bit more balance and the tens markers are all aligned.

    2nd version.
Put the "X XX XXX" counters below the I-IX row, added a (free domain) paper texture and slightly faded out the grid irregulary.

    >Mediafire link for 90x180 map with alligned numbers and additional paper texture<

Btw: The file is not exactly 120 or 180cm long. Just tell your print shop to print it 120cm or 180cm long. The other side comes out at 90 automatically. Otherwise it might become a bit bigger.
