    Default 3D printed ships

I pulled this out of another thread, so that we could discuss 3D printing portion of it.

I think the technology is going to improve dramatically and quickly and in maybe two years they will be able to make beautiful, accurate 3d models consistently. The possibility exists, at least in my mind which has it moments and absolutely no foundation upon which to make this claim, that perhaps they could produce 3d printed models in multi-colours removing the need to paint...you read it here first!!! ;)
The 3D printing tech is already capable of handing are quality needs. It is just that Shapeways does not offer the full resolution of the printers. And of course, we are not yet willing to pay the price for them ( DR.I would come in at about $28). Have a look at this printing site to see some very nice printings, Moddler.com. As for colored printing, it's here now as well:

That is as it comes directly from Shapeways. It is made from Sandstone, so I'm not sure how good the finish quality is or how strong it is. I should know today or tomorrow and one of those is in my last order. It will be interesting to see if it could stand up to gaming!

Even if Shapeways does start producing ship models, we will run into the problem of needing cards for them to use for SOG. As discussed in the thread about cards, we will have to purchase the SOG models to get the cards to play the game, which will negate the need to purchase other models. However, if the Shapeways models can evolve into high quality models, gamers may wish to spend their money on them instead of SOG and just use them with other game systems.

Well, it's quite possible that some of the players will want to have miniatures of different 74's. Most likely the stats for a standard 74 will be the same. So, once you have the card for it, you could paint up and field any number of differently painted models for it. The same as we do with repainted DR.Is over on the Wings side of the house.

No, not all created equal... but in game terms, close enough I think to do some. Besides, how long do you think it will take for people to start making their own custom cards? lol I know I'll be sailing an HMS Hajj at some point!

Have thou not-st heard of the game Settlers of Cattan? Some one raise me a grate!
