Custom playmats

Greetings friends,

I have made customized playmats for this great game.

I have asked for permission to Ares Games and I can share this one at full size:

That is a 67x98cm playmat.

Further to it I have made more playmats but as I used Sails of Glory logos, or even scanned material from terrain packs I can't share them at full size, although they give me permission to share it at 800x600 resolution:

So I'm ignorant of all the new tech possibilities here. I have seen several digital playmats now for different terrains. How can they be used? How can they be printed and on what mediums? What kind of store does this kind of printing? How can they print these digital images on 5×7 canvas, cloth, or vinyl? What machine does that and where do I find one?

I printed them at pixartprinting. I did it at Banners & Mesh section, PVC banners. A playmat of 95x135cm aproximately it cost about 15 euros.

I spent a lot of time working in it.... so finally that work and that time was so worth for me...

I sent my scenarios at editable format in order to Ares Games could work in them easily to be edited. So I think they are going to publish them soon. We have to be patient.

Hi Vol,

Many people get vinyl mats printed at signage stores, ones that make banners for events, etc.

I recently met a couple of guys who just finished a successful Kickstarter for X-Wings mats. We have been discussing mats for WoG and SoG. I will probably be speaking to them again within a week. Let me know if there is anything specific you would like to see, sizes, etc.

I don't want to detract from Jose Manuel's beautiful mats, but someone on BoardGame Geek recently posted a plain mat .pdf that can be used to print on vinyl or canvas. No grid lines, text or images; just an image of the Caribbean.

I'm seeing more resources for SoG on BGG than I thought might be there? It's worth checking out on a regular basis.

I found the gridlines helpful at Origins; they made determining wind attitude quite easy and fast. I don't recall seeing them as a visual hinderance either.

I think they're essential, but you could probably add them easily enough to this particular mat .pdf. The creator had asked about dimensions on the original SoG mats so perhaps that's his next project?

I'll have Sue take a look. She has all the graphic design stuff on her computer; I imagine putting in lines would be quite easy for her. Come to think of it, I think I will have her develop some custom mats (Jose Manuel, she really liked what you did here).

I use Photoshop. I took the original game playmat at low resolution (800x600) and I scaled it to size I was using. After that I draw the lines in the same exact positions. After that I deleted the original playmat reference.

I usually print at www.pixartprinting.com. I mentioned it in my before messages.

I painted an old rubber mat (anti slipping mat for carpets) with blue varnish color. And sprayed some color effects with my airbrush. At last I draw the navigation lines with a paint marker.
The mat has some structure so it looks like small 3D-waves

Have to confess, one of our online retailers offers official mats and I ordered 2 of them for a good price

An updated mat by Guido Rangnitt (Guido1 on Board Game Geek).

This is his file description: Here is another custom game mat for the Sails of Glory game. This time it includes a grid. It consists of two parts. Each could be used as a single mat but they could be layed next to each other forming a very large playing surface (160cm x 180cm) for longer games. Both maps together are more than 4 times this size of the original mat. Again I used a single aerial photo of the sea near the Bahamas for it. Just separated into two parts. It could easily be printed on PVC tarpaulin or canvas.
