Default HMS Pickle for Sails of Glory

Please excuse the amateurish modeling...but this thing is tiny! Anyway, every British Fleet at Trafalgar needs one! I thought I'd see if this Langton 1:1200 Tops'l Schooner could be made into a Sails of Glory conversion, surely the smallest unrated ship you will find in the game. Probably 1/2 point battery strength. Useful for signaling and transferring the Admiral's Flag if not just for decoration. Anyway, I humbly submit, HMS Pickle for SOG.

Nice Pickle. It had to be said and I said it. That would be a fine addition to any fleet Michael.

one of my favorite ships, based solely on the name. Glad to see it make a Sails appearance, and it looks mighty good!

    Very cool, Michael. Great idea.

I have a question, though. Would it be kosher to play with such a ship? Some sailors earn their bread and butter through capturing prizes, making them dillerious with joy. Unfortunately, I doubt this one ever will have such luck, which could end up souring the crew. I mean it would surely take a captain who is cool as a cucumber to handle such disappointment, otherwise the crew might bury him in lime.

My wife certainly thinks the cat, as I spent hours working with Photoshop to create the image. What other ship's card features the crew? No, Pickle won't be standing in the Line of Battle, but she certainly makes the Rated vessels look the more impressive. However the pickle jokes were almost worth the effort.

A little slice of humor wedged amidst such a thread might not preserve the thread's original intent, but could be sweet nonetheless if one relishes it.

All pickle jokes aside, I love it......I fully encourage the creation of custom ships (within a reasonable historical context). If I ever get a more relaxed work schedule I may look into this myself, well done again.

Nice blog. I agree with "I hope this shows that Langton 1:1200 models, at least the smaller unrated vessels, can be used alongside the 1:1000 scale SOG models. This opens lots of possibilities for customizing the fleet."

I'd agree with Eric, nice blog post. I love the addition of being a dispatch vessel and carrying the news of Lord Nelson....Speaking of which this is the next book on my to read list

I think in addition to including dispatches and transferring the Admiral or Commodore's flag in the Rules, we need to think seriously about towing disabled ships by both frigates and ship-sloops, as well as tops'l schooners like Pickle.

Michael, I think you have demonstrated that a line like Langton's Great Lakes Warships could be easily adapted to SoG. Additionally, as smaller ships anyway, they won't look significantly out of place on a table with Ares' larger ships, i.e. there aren't comparable Ares ships.

I agree, but it may be more of a campaign rule than a tactical maneuver used in battle(?)

The other thing is, we could also use add-on rules to allow a chance to tow a Zero Hull or Zero Crew ship out of the line rather than being assumed captured--the rub is we need some way to decide "Destroyed? Y/N", and if D=N "Captured? Y/N" before even proceeding to allow a chance to Tow Home.

BTW, the towed ship should still be subject to capture or destruction, and some sharp maneuvering limits on the towing ship, bbut maybe allow some recovery of points for successfully towing a friendly derelict off your side of the map, more for an enemy one.

Come on Chris. Can't you envision two of our U.K. shipmates playing SoG somewhere in Piccalilli Circus?

If anyone is interested and has a spare 70k sterling laying around you can buy a full size reproduction of the HMS Pickle:

She does need a bit of work though...

Thanks for the tip. However, I must file this in the 'to do' list 'if I won the lottery'. I wonder if it will sell or not?

Compared to the previous price of 350k, the 70k price seems a bargain.
