By chance I saw the last 30 minutes of the "Three Musketeers" movie on TV.

I knew they put a lot of money in this film, but didn't saw it in the cinema before.

That's why I was a little bit surprised about the used ships in the final battle.

    A flying French first rate!

I liked the movie and the ships very much. Just a light, fantasy story with great effects

Looks like we might need a set of WoG/SoG crossover rules. However, I would have thought that a few cannonballs through the gasbag should quickly bring one down.

Interesting scenes when they opened fire vs. each other.

Masses of wooden splinters were flying around, but nobody suffered injuries from them.

Do they use cannonballs or some ultramegahighexsplosive shells (excluding splinter-proof crew)?

They were called Musketeers but how often do we see them using a musket?

Pretty much the same as grenadiers used grenades! Or even less.

Made for the Steampunk, Alt-history crowd I suppose. Quite popular in miniatures gaming these days.

The Richard Lester version from the 70s had muskets in use and is still the best adaptation to date.

If you want to see a 3 musketeer movie that at least attempts to follow the actual Dumas storyline then check out the old Gene Kelly flick.

The man who choriographed the sword play is the same man that did Princess Bride, he considered those two efforts to be his best.

The most recent iteration of the Dumas classic has received rave reviews from the critics. I would not have heard of this except for bakblast's report on the Gene Kelly version. One YouTube led to another. This BBC version does look intriguing. I wonder if/when we'll have access to a dvd version here in the States?

I don't know... I believe literary classic should stay what it is - literary classic, even as a movie.

Jim, it seems like a series. If done well, it will be exciting to watch; but, if a series, it could devolve into a soap opera. Fingers are crossed.

Heмaњa, I think the Hornblower series was one that was done well, respectful to the literary source, if you will.

    I agree.
And I have strong feeling Hollywood has lost compass, making mainstream special effect 3D movies, without concern for movie's true qualities. Like one has beautiful set of elaborated well painted minies, but only too simple set of dice-decisive rules to play by.

I agree, my Friend. The problem with movies that emphasize special effects over plot, and especially character, is that the movies do not have staying power. One of my favorite films is 12 Angry Men. The film mostly takes place around a table, with 12 jury members talking. Every time I show the film to students (college age), they are enthralled, wrapped up into the film, yet there are no special effects, violence, sex, etc. We have great discussions afterwards.

I think the emphasis of special effects over narrative is one of the reasons Peter Jackson's current Hobbit movies are far less than what they could have been.

Think "Three Musketeers meets The A Team" - its hokum, but very enjoyable. The A team link is even emphasised in an episode where D'Artagnan says "I love it when a plan comes together". Although they did miss a trick by not having Athos give Porthos a drugged glass of milk to get him on a horse

Eh -- _Pacific Rim_ is a much-better film if one is versed in Anime; someone not so versed is going to miss a lot of stuff.

Pity I'll never get to make my satire of the action-movie form, _One Hundred Million Dollars Worth Of Explosions_ (fans of _The Critic_ will get the ref). :)

Last night I watched part of Three musketeers (that version with flying ships) on some local TV. Big and shiny toy.
