Storing the ships in the original box once you've 'rigged' them is not possible, but I'm not going to trash the boxes because I like them for the art and the ability to carry other materials. If I ever get to a state where I'm traveling to play the game I'll be looking at Keith's options, or something like Ed has set up for storage and transportation.

I am going to magnetize the base and ship to keep them from twisting around. Might put a piece of metal on the bottom of a craft box which will keep them from shifting. Until I rig them they will stay in their original packing. Once Keith produces those foam trays I will be buying those.

I'll store them in foam trays for ease of accessibility and protection. And keep the cartons, in case I want to sell them in 15 or 20 years.

Once I rig 'em, I'll mod the original packaging, then once I find a suitable foam solution I'll flatten those and archive 'em. Frankly, I wish we could buy empty extra Starter Set boxes.

    Let's see...
    Wave 1: 32 ships = 32 ship mats = 8 Capt/Crew Decks = 2 extra counters sets
advance stock for Specials and Wave 2: 1 Capt/Crew Deck, 2 counter sets (need to snag 6 more CCD's and 3 more counter sets)
    Starter 1:
    -4 Side A Starter Ships
    -1 Starter Counter Set
    -4 Starter Ship Mats
    Empty 1:
    -4 Side A Kickstarter Ships
    -1ea Terrain Packs 1 & 2
    -4 KS Ship Mats
    Empty 2:
    -4 Side A "original flags"
    -1 Extra Counter Set
    -4 Ship Mats
    Empty 3:
    -4 Side A captures
    -1ea Terrain Packs 1 & 2
    -4 Ship Mats
    Starter 2:
    -4 Side B Starter Ships
    -1 Starter Counter Set
    -4 Starter Ship Mats
    Empty 4:
    -4 Side B Kickstarter Ships
    -1ea Terrain Packs 1 & 2
    -4 Ship Mats
    Empty 5:
    -4 Side B "original flags"
    -1ea Terrain Packs 1 & 2
    -4 Ship Mats
    Empty 6:
    -4 Side B captures
    -1 Extra Counter Set
    -4 Ship Mats
And still would need to figure out where to slot in...
    2x Game Mat, plus 2 add-on (4 total)
    2x Wooden Attitude Indicator
    2x Wooden Ruler
    4x Smoke Cloud packs

Of course, I'm always looking for higher density "More Crap Per Cubic Inch of Container" solutions...

For now, they will stay in the original packaging. At some point, I will ditch the original packaging and begin using something that can carry all of my ships in a single carton/box/container.

Probably looking at a BattleFoam storage solution. All my foam is BF, so it just makes sense to continue with this format, and it will fit all my bags; most likely put everything into a 720. I am trying to decide if I want to store them vertically, or have unique cut-outs for each ship lying horizontally (vertically seems to provide more storage). I'll probably store the cards and mats separately, as I do with WoG, as foam storage would be a waste for these products.

    Cheers!

Now that I have my ships I am keeping them in their original boxes, they are being carried inside a stackable plastic box from Target (remember to use cash there! ;) They fit neatly into the stackable storage boxes, and I can add another layer and carry them all from the handle ontop. They are made by "Sterilite" I think.

Default SoG Sails into JoAnn Fabrics - a 1st attempt at storage

JoAnn Fabrics has seen more of me in the past two months that the previous 50 years combined. Where has this place been all my life? Different colors of felt for terrain, storage bins, materials for landscaping, and a place in which Sue can browse quite happily. Did I mention the sales and coupons?

My recent indulgences centered on storage for WoG and SoG components. I bought a couple of different items, supplemented by a few Dollar Tree items, and have, what I believe to be, an adequate storage solution for my current needs.

I used an Artbin Super Satchel Box With Removable Dividers 9007AB to store ships, ship logs, and maneuver cards. The ship bases fit perfectly. I can easily place all of the ship logs within one cell, creating space for additional ships - especially the big second wavers, wind attitude indicators, etc.

I used an Artbin Super Satchel Single Compartment to store the remaining game components: ship mats and counters for 12 ships, 5 battery mats/logs, coastlines, rulers, reefs, damage bags, etc.

I bought small containers to hold the ship mat counters, one ship set per container, making it easy to pass one to each player; these come in a 10-pack for a dollar at the Dollar Tree. I bought a Jewelry Designer Deluxe Organizer-20 Compartments from JoAnn to store the remaining counters, including five battery mat/log counters. All of these containers are stored in the Single Compartment above.

Yes, this is a conundrum through which I am working. I think I found a storage solution using plastic bins that makes all of the Ares' boxes redundant. I do not envision selling my stuff, and if I do, I wouldn't anticipate that being until many years from now. Do I really want to store a bunch of boxes, an ever growing number of boxes, because one day, in decades to come, I might want to sell them? I think when that day comes, I would probably give them away, anyway.

The SO and The Me have the same problem: We go into Jo-Ann's, and struggle to not leave with whole bunches of stuff. The difference is: She's looking at the fabrics; I'm looking at the models and construction supplies. :)

Models? I must visit other stores. I think the one in town is on the small size.

I bought several different color fabrics for winter terrain, desert terrain, gray for no-man's-land, etc. I started using them with WoG AARs for the OTT campaign, and will use them this year with WWII 15mm minis. They make for great, inexpensive base terrains.

I buy a lot of storage and materials there...

That said, Jo-Ann and Michaels will NEVER compete with a specialist hobby shop, because all they stock is the same old tired Revell and Testors re-treads. Great if you're looking for "whatever they feel like reissuing this year" (and the 1/48 Revell F-15E is probably the best Strike Eagle on the market despite not having any payload and its conformal tanks being not quite right)... not so much if you're looking for some variety in your builds. (Of course, I'm spoiled, having a truly World Class model shop within a couple hour's drive with a reputation that draws visitors from other CONTINENTS...)

Eric, thanks very much for this post. I have a Jo-Ann's very close by so I can cross check what you got with what they might have in stock. Ours is on the larger size so hopefully I'll find what you did. Another advantage you pointed out, they have coupons in every Sunday's paper!

Check out JoAnn's website as well. Great deals and some online only items. Yesterday, they had a deal for $0.48 flat rate shipping, and most of their containers were 50% off.

Nice. Easy to magnetize the bottoms to hold your ships when fully rigged!

Most stores where I live don't sell wine in boxes like that, or if they do it is in the separate cellar area. (Where if you must ask the price, you can't afford it!). Wonder if there is an online resource.....

Hi David, I hope these work well for you. There's enough room in these, that you can arrange the card cells differently and easily store 2-4 more ships. I know the SoL masts are too tall to put the maneuver decks underneath, but the smaller ships probably have enough room. Let us know how it works out for you.

Eric, thanks for this detailed post!! I was looking at the Jo-Ann's web site trying to determine which bins to get, and now I know.

The Plano boxes I have for X-wing are not deep enough for the ships.

Still working out how I will treat the underside of the bases to keep the ships from slipping around on the mat! Found the perfect plastic container for ship storage at Office Max, as well as smaller containers for chit, cards, and ship mats, etc. which are then consolidated in a larger box like the ships are in for transport. They're all blue too! Will use Styrofoam glued down in the box to hold the bases steady. Still working out the details on design layout.

One thing is the ships will need to be secured and not be subject to bouncing around if the container is dropped, or some clown rear ends my car while going to or from a game! I've learned from experience on that!!

If I recall correctly you don't have to be a member to shop in the liquor store part, at least in the US. I haven't been there in a number of years either. Now I may have to get some wine...er I mean ship storage boxes!

Stopped into JoAnns and those totes worked out great. Had to pick up two of the 9007ab. Picked up two of these lockable pill boxes for the ship map chits. Each compartment just holds one ship mat worth of chits.

    Hi Eric!

I like the ArtBin containers you recommended. The three I ordered online from Jo-Ann's were still on sale (TY for the timely tip), and I've configured the extra compartment dividers in the first container like this:

I'm sure with the remaining two boxes, I'll be able to get most, if not all of my ships, logs, and cards contained together in them (with additional room for any other game bits in the remaining positions). There's some space between the lid and the top of the divider walls also, so might be able to put flat game pieces between the two, and secured with the lid shut.

Anyway, thanks again for the heads-up on these, as they work great!
