    Congrats!!

And now that we have final prices, I have to say that KS backers got an amazing deal. My early bird Lt. pledge with extras was $100 in savings based on AA prices. It looks like Ares gave the KS backers the game at wholesale price.

Does a 'set' of smoke clouds consist of two of the markers? (Just trying to determine how many smoke clouds will be in the 2 'sets' that I will receive at Lt. level.)

Thanks for the info, Keith. I have to say that I really like the smoke clouds! They really help drive home the image of the cannons firing. I can't wait to see what else you have up your sleeves.

As you say, they add a lot of visual impact to the game. They also make it easy for all players to know if a ship has shot that turn or not. With as much stuff going on in managing your own ship (Advanced rules and optional ones), even on medium sized tables it can become a little difficult keeping up with engagements that you are not directly a part of... but knowing if a ship can fire next turn could be a big difference in some situations.

I think the item the KS backers are going to want to pick up extras of the most is the AI. After playing quite a few games of this, it's very handy to have more than one or two of them on the table. Essentially every player has to check his attitude at least every two or three moves (if not every move). That translates into a lot of waiting around for another player to finish with the AI.

Thanks for the update, Keith. Just ordered some of the AI, rulers and smoke sets. Now I can get an early start on highlighting the clouds, etc., before the game arrives in November.

    Hey Keith,
Just a quick fyi that I received the SoG accessories; all in great condition. I tried using a china marker to color in the smoke clouds, but I think I'm going to head to the hobby shop and pick up some pastel/chalk/crayons as a substitute. I'd thought I might try coloring the AI's, but after seeing them in person I like the way they look just fine. The rulers might get some attention, but I don't want to ruin how nice they look already. Pictures will follow when I've made some progress.
    Thanks!

Can't wait to see them. For coloring in the details on the clouds, the best thing is still the old fashion kid's crayon! I might revisit the CR down the road once this supply sells out to see if I can't dress it up some. This initial batch was designed to be a close replacement for the official one in looks as part of the KS project.

One thing we did when using these was to leave the brown cover on the back, so when going into combat, intended fire was marked, with brown side up.
Then the smoke was turned over to the white once the fire was resolved.
They work really well and look great as a visual.

Here are some photos of the slightly enhanced ruler, the AI (left as is) and smoke markers that I got via the online store. As Keith indicated above, black crayons work great for coloring in the black lines on the smoke. It turns out the china markers are comparable and wipe off just a little bit better. I do like the way the ruler turned out, but I needed to seal the wood first as the ink really wants to bleed into the fiber. I had a lot of fun taking pictures, which is just another indicator that I can't wait for this game to get here.

What did you end up using on the ruler to darken it? Also, did you just use a spray varnish/wood sealer? Thanks!

Jim, nice enhancement on the ruler.

I will try tung oil on one to see the effects. If it turns out o.k., I will post a picture. If not, I will warn.

    Hey Scott,

I used a spray matte finish product from Rustoleum. It works on wood, plastic, miniature ship models, etc. I didn't want to darken the wood so I used the clear finish. Then a fine tipped ink pen and black, brown and red inks from Privateer Press. I may add another coat of matte finish to seal in the ink and add some extra protection to the wood.

Do let us know. I think a slightly darker finish might look really good against the blue sea background.

We used tung oil on a set of African mahogany dressers; they look fantastic. It really brings out the natural look of wood. I think it might work well on the rulers. A trial will tell.

An oak finish might look good and fit the theme.

I use that matt finish to seal my miniatures. For the water I then go back with a brush on semi-gloss coat (Liquitex). On the wood I might try Teak oil or Penetrol to darken it a bit. Penetrol will soak in and protect the wood without darkening it too much.

BTW - Once again your ships look great! Are those Langton bases mounted on a block of wood?

Any concerns that any sealer/wax/oil with pigment to darken the ruler would cause the existing markings on the ruler hard to read?

Yes, wood packages I get from Michael's, a local hobby/craft store. It's pine or basswood I believe. I'm actually thinking of getting some custom bases made from Litko. I think I've read elsewhere on our site that they do custom work, and that would save me a good amount of time.

Yes, that's why I tried the clear finish first. I may try a stain/varnish overall on the next attempt, and then apply the inking for the letters, etc. But I don't want the wood too dark for the reasons you've mentioned.

I use Litko for the majority of my bases, although GF-9 sells bulk bases at conventions ($10 for a take away carton full of sizes you choose). Litko does have a custom base maker, but they probably have the size you need for the Langton bases on hand. I can't recall the exact size offhand.

According to some information from Ares, there will be rules for them in the future (can't remember where I read it, think it was a comment on KS). right now, they are "just" fluff, although a extremely good looking one.

There was a comment from Keith that this would be the case. Not sure if Ares said as much. There aren't any smoke rules out for playtesting yet, thats for certain.

I don't imagine smoke rules are a priority for Ares at present. However, now that KS supporters have a full version of the rules in-hand, I assume some interesting house rules will be developed relatively soon, at least in comparison to any official release.

I checked the comments from Ares to the KS updates and there is indeed no mentioning of rules for the smoke clouds. Sorry if I raised the hopes of some people.

Ares approached me about making special rules for the smoke clouds. How that will turn out in the future I do not know. So for now they are just fluff, but they do serve well to indicate to all the players (even the ones at the other end of the table) which ships have fired that turn. It can be hard to make that out by looking at a ship mat several feet away.

It will in the mail on Monday.

When is your con? Have you finalized the type of game you're running? I am doing a merchant escort that will enable all 12 ships if there are enough folks. I think I could make that number at Rock-Con, but I am not sure about Flatcon. I am still waiting on them, in fact.

I noticed a night or two ago that according to the website they have you doing an event on Friday night. Not sure now busy Friday will be as I have never been able to attend on a Friday night before but hopefully it will go smooth and be a good draw.

If nothing else looks like this year I will likely be able to attend Friday...so worst case scenario, Do you want British or French?

If you're running this weekend, then we're doing fine. I'm running the weekend of November 8th. We'll just have to get it transferred right away. I have (6) official pre-registration slots because I'm not sure what my assets are until I get them in my hands. I'm getting there early Friday, so I plan on changing the sign-in sheet if I can accommodate more. I've had a lot of interest in the Great Hall Games forum.

I received an email confirmation today, notifying me that I am officially in for Friday evening. I hope you can make it.

There are 12 ships, rulers, chits, etc. You will need something for a playing surface. I picked up felt this evening from JoAnn Fabrics - on sale 6' x # at $3 per yard - basically $1 per every 1' x 6'.

I tried a darker stain on the ruler tonight, and I don't think it's too dark? I actually like both versions, but their usefulness might be determined by area lighting as much as anything? 3 photos for your perusal.

I like it. Gives the ruler a look that fits in with the theme. Still easy to read and less glare off them, at least in the photos.

Another thumbs up for the darker ruler!
It really adds to the effect, but it makes the Wind Indicator look unfinished by comparison.
(I wonder if painting the compass card/base might work well here?)

I used Varathane's "Golden Mahogany" stain. Wipe on with good paper towel and immediately wipe off until it gets to a shade you like.

I decided I like the darker stain well enough that I did both of the AI's I have.

I decided I like the darker stain well enough that I did both of the AI's I have.
Love the mahogany stain combined with the black crayons, they look so much better than plain wood! Thanks for the tip, i'll definitely be doing this to mine when they arrive next week, no wait next month, no wait, december, no wait...

Just a quick fyi. I didn't use crayons on the rulers. It's actually red, black and brown ink applied with traditional ink nibs. It's much more precise, although it did take a bit longer to apply.

    Excellent!

Based on what I saw this weekend, I would say the darker ruler would be easier to see at a con, especially on a larger table with the type of lighting that larger rooms usually have.

They work really well and look great as a visual.
We placed the white side up after the guns fired. It provided a great visual as well as reminded us which ships completed combat. At the end of the turn, we flipped the counters over to the brown side, and placed them on the ship base, so the following turn, it was clear which guns could not fire, i.e. they were being loaded. At the end of that turn, we removed all the brown counters, indicating the guns were loaded and ready for the next turn. It worked great. All of the info was right on the table in front of us. It helped when plotting moves because you are looking at the table, and you don't have to remember when a given ship will be able to shoot; it is right there in front of you, clearly indicated. I doubt we will use the ammo chits on the game mats for anything other than to remind us what type of ammo we have loaded.

We will order more of these, definitely. We did not anticipate they would become actual playing aids.
