    Default Santisima Trinidad-Langton 1/1200 Build

Well, I finally finished the Langton Santisima Trinidad. A very interesting ship with lots of history.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spanish...Dsima_Trinidad
    http://www.todoababor.es/listado/nav...atrinidad2.htm

This is my fifth build and fifth Spanish ship. Only ten more to construct to have all the Spanish ships at Trafalgar.

It might be time to take a break and try some other nationality? I hope you don't mind all the photos, but I'm pretty pleased with how she turned out.

    Cheers!

Why am I thinking of the moving office building from "The Crimson Permanent Assurance"? :)

And right you should be pleased Jim, she is a very pretty ship. I especially like the towed boats. Are they GHQ?

Thanks, Vol. Yup, they're GHQ boats and anchors. Turned out much better than I expected. I wish GHQ did quality masts and sails!

Not sure, but I certainly enjoyed the file cabinet broadside!

Jim top marks for this project. The weathered sails really add to the overall affect, and your lines are akin to calligraphy.

    Thanks for sharing.

I wish you guys would stop posting pictures. I was getting ready to build the Santisima Trinidad, but after looking at Jim's great looking model I put mine back in the package.

Ed, I've seen your ship repair photos. Really nice work! You need to pull your ST back out of the package and get to work.

No excuses! I thought the same thing looking at all the other great builders here before I started my first ship. Now it's your turn.

I've always had a problem painting ships "at quarters". Any helpful hints besides good magnification glasses, a fine brush and steady hands?
    I have the first two.

@ Gunner, This sort of thing makes me WANT to have a go, I doubt mine will come as close, but then I could really see how much work, effort and skill goes into these ships.

Unlike some other forums, I see nobody on SoG Anchorage who will try to belittle the work of another. (and long may that continue)

@ Nightmoss, this is fine work, well presented and well executed

I hope to follow with pics of my own vessels soon

For me I go back in several passes with breaks in between. Do the gun barrels on one side first then go back to catch the other. And it doesn't matter how many times you do it you'll still find something you've missed, but it's less stressful to do it this way rather than try and do a whole side in one go.

    Jim,
Just seen your photos, Love the ship, love the painting, love the rigging. Once the Anchors are catted the anchor ropes are removed from the anchors and pulled into the ship. That is me throwing a pebble. A very small pebble

The anchor had been cut to get under way in a hurry?
Looks better without the anchor. Haven't seen a better looking ship on the anchorage.

That's good to know, Rory, thanks! I looked at several websites in order to find correct anchor placement. Outside of the HMS Victory, which shows anchors and ropes I only found one photo of the USS Constitution with anchors displayed and that also had anchor ropes. Lots of models of the Constitution show anchors, but not many photos I could find.

I probably should have asked here first. It makes perfect sense you wouldn't sail with open anchor portholes (if that's what they call them?) in the bow.

So, I guess I'll just have to maintain that this is the Santisima Trinidad on display many years after the splendid Alliance victory at Trafalgar?

Please do post photos and lots of them. One of the real pleasures of the Anchorage is seeing what folks create. It's inspiring, educational and brings great enjoyment to this site.

    Jim,
It hurts me to see your lovely ships, I only wish I could do as well as you. You make me try harder. I do think she is your best yet. She is clearly coming into port ready to anchor and the re-fill the water butts, with her boats ready to go ashore. I only said about the cables to help, not put down. I would/could not say bad things about your beautiful ships.

As I've said in other posts I come here to learn and share. So, now you've taught me two things; one about the anchor cables and two about water butts (which I had to go look up). Thank you for the compliments and sharing your knowledge. I appreciate them both. Cheers!

Your Ship looks amazing! Incredible painting skills, i do not have that steady a hand at all. I like what you have done with the towing the ships boats, its the first time I've seen it done on a model, I may have to copy you on that one.

Thanks. I got the boats idea from Vol's blog: http://volsminiatures.blogspot.com/

As for the painting, some of it's by hand and some is not. Being an n scale model railroader I had on hand graphic/chart tape we use for simulating white lines on n scale roads. The bottom white line on the ST is 1/64 'tape', as are some of the black lines I cut to size for in between the gun ports. My hand is steady most of the time, but I also like to find easier ways to model whenever I can. Might be cheating in some folks eyes, but it makes for a better looking ship I think.

Sure thing, Rory. Way before computers and CAD graphics everything was done with pen, pencil, ink and graphic tape. While there are still a few producers of graphic/chart tape out there, most can't compete with digital production techniques. I know there are some companies who produce the tape for white board presentations, etc., but again the computers have pretty much taken over. The tape in many widths is still used by hobbyists, from model railroaders to radio controlled builders, etc.

I don't know if you can get them via Amazon in the UK, but that's how I initially got mine outside of the local hobby stores (who no longer carry these in stock).

Here are a couple of links with a little more information.

    http://www.amazon.com/gp/browse.html...A11CSR91P49K9B
    http://www.amazon.com/Graphic-Matte-...909070&sr=1-47

The tape is tacky enough to stick to paint and metal, but I still spray or paint a dull coat finish over the top of it to keep it from coming loose. We do the same on the n scale roads.

I hope this is what you were looking for?

I agree with devsdoc, anything that gives a better finished result is great. I have been using regular masking tape on my models and the lines are not nearly as sharp as yours. Will have to have a look at getting some.

    Thanks for the advice.

My avatar is based on one of my old RPG characters -- we were, in essence, "pirate accountants". There was a lot of "is stealing this worth the s***storm it's going to bring down on our heads?", and certain groups were Strictly Off-Limits -- for ex.: Stealing ship's cargo was allowed, but robbing passengers wasn't; kidnapping was only used in special cases, while slavery... well, if you knew why folks became pirates, you know why slavers didn't last long around us; and in general, killing was kept to a minimum, as People Who Steal were generally considered less important a threat than People Who Steal And Kill.

Of course, no one truly knows the history of the society -- the Russian files were lost during the Revolution, and the Spanish didn't like to admit how much stuff they lost to us; but if one digs into the files of the Hudson' Bay Company, there's references to some unusually advanced (and well-concealed) fortifications around the Columbia River mouth.... >:)

Thanks Rob. Sorry, I've not logged on for several months. I actually did a kit bash of the ST using one of the French 1st Rates. The work was done in 2014 so i'm sure it was lost due to time and new discussions. Here's the thread.

I followed to your thread and the other pictures Jim.
    That is even more astounding.
You produced that just during the two years that I was not on the site. I must have just missed when I came back in about March 15.
I will have to look more closely at those periods of time to see if I have missed out on anything else.
    Thanks for the directions.

If you do look further in that time frame I'm sure you'll find some great stuff from Rory, Vol, James and others. Langton ships is where I started my ship building and with their help and advice I was able to move quickly into modeling with Sails of Glory ships. Cheers.

I just had a search for this tape Jim, and although Amazon US stock it I can't order from them for some reason.
Amazon U.K. say they have it but not in stock for the foreseeable future and only in 3mm upward.
What width did you use? and if it is only available in the Us I will have to try and get someone to send it over for me.

What width did you use? and if it is only available in the Us I will have to try and get someone to send it over for me.

I ordered 1/32 and 1/64 tapes from Amazon. I found some listed on Amazon UK, but it's 3mm which is close to 1/8 and probably wider than what you're looking for. Here's the link.

I found another company in the US that says they ship overseas? Try them if you can't find something in the UK?

    Thanks Jim.
All the U.K. suppliers don't go below 3mm and as you say that is too thick.

have a notice to indicate that they do not ship to the U.K.

    Thanks for trying Jim.

Send me a PM with your mailing address. I can send you 2 black and 2 white. They gave me quite a few extra when I ordered last time and I'll never use them all at this point in my miniature building.

With recent discussions and the impressive modeling by Dave of the Santisima Trinidad I've been surfing the web looking at various representations of the famous Spanish First Rate. Lots of photos and videos available. I'm sure this has been mentioned before, but there is a impressive 1/50 scale diorama of the Trafalgar action involving the Santisima Trindad. Didn't want to hijack anyone's thread again so I'll post one of the videos here along with a still of the ST. I believe this was crafted by Curro Agudo Mangas and might even be for sale?

A great big thanks to Jim for the gift of a set of tapes to do the lines on the side of Santisima.
Like a true shipmate he refused any gratuity for said tape, nor would allow me to pay his mailing costs.
