    Channel 4 television are repeating the programme 'Nelson's Navy: Back from the Dead' 2.05-3.00 a.m. on Monday 24th June. Modern forensic techniques are used to examine the bodies of dead sailors.

    The programme was interesting but a bit gruesome in places. It looked at the different types of injuries crew could receive: falling from the topmast, splinter wounds in battle, a foot crushed by a recoiling gun, a cutlass cut to the face, the effects of scurvy and siphilis and injuries from bare-knuckle fighting. The horrors of primitive surgery were covered. It was the first of a series of three programmes. I am not sure whether the other two will also be naval.

    Thanks David. That looks very interesting. Forensic shows are very popular in the States, at present, especially ficticious police series, etc. To use forensics for such an historical exploration as this would probably have good viewership.

    I imagine one thing such a show would do is to dispel some of the romanticism surrounding the age-of-sail.
