    I always thought that the U.S.A. and France were allies after the U.S.A. gained independence.

    The French government that aided the Americans during their revolution was made up of the royalty of France. The French revolution that followed created a whole new government for France that was not on as good of terms with the United States as the previous government. Relations improved once Napoleon started dominating the handling of affairs for France.

    To make it short, the Quasi War started in 1797 when France started seizing American merchant ships carrying supplies to anyone at war with France, and ended around 1800.
