I'm certainly in favour of double ball for opening salvos only. Whether or not it is played at grape range or half ruler matters little to me. I'd be happy with half ruler range in my own games, and...

By historical accounts, most engagements were fought at 'pistol shot' range too, which RAI would be the half ruler.
Far enough apart to not entangle and also far enough apart so boarding actions...
When ball has the full length of the ruler, it is perfectly justified that double ball is half range.
To argue otherwise send to me to smack of, dare I say it? Sour grapes.
Thanks Bligh.
Yes agree entirely on removing all carronade ships from this - they are, as has been noted, an entirely different beast all together.
Looks like Rivalsky now stocks Sails of Glory! :)
Just to weigh in on this, I always looked at the double shot as in fact being Double Ball, hence the increased damage multiplier.
I don't however see any problem with allowing ball over grapes an...
Rob, from the perspective of an Australian gamer, where we tend to overpay for both content and shipping from overseas, Miniature Market are excellent in my opinion and I highly recommend.
The fact...
A quiet updated on this.
I ordered a few ships from Miniature Market on the 22nd December 2017 using their 'slow shipping' option (cheapest postage to Australia). Received today 8th January 2018...
@Killick - Thanks for the info. I just used Miniature Market and received my order today. Very impressed with the price and speed of standard postage. I am going to make another order with their...
Thanks Killick.
I assume by Keith you mean the Anchorage Store? Postage is my major concern.
I've bought from Mighty Ape previously, so that's good to know, and I've also made a purchase from...
I agree Rob. I was just making sure that Jonas understood that I didn't have both English and Spanish using carronades seeing as he mentioned it being not necessarily an appropriate comparison.
I was always under the impression (perhaps incorrectly) that Spanish ships were better in gunnery, or simply had a higher weight of metal than their French or English counterparts.
Thankfully I didn't have the Spaniards using carronades, only the English.
I was still stunned by the firepower of an initial broadside from a 1st rate though. It's the first time I've had one on...
Cheers to the North American sea dogs!!
Interesting. I didn't know that. Clearly the Spanish captain didn't either!
Played a two on two scenario using Carronades rule for the British and standard gunnery for the Spanish today.
I noted that they were mostly effective in the chase due to the wider firing arc but...
That's true.
All carronade did exist of course, to devastating effect, but were very uncommon in the era so that's a plus.
In your opinion how do you view Carronades and their ability to fire each turn Texas?
Essentially in the same way? Or okay because of the range penalty?
Am I wrong in thinking that reducing the circle to 12 miles would be incorrect?
I'm sure that lookouts from the top rigging would have a view beyond that of 15 miles as I thought most ships of the...
I like both the Carronades rule, and the Continuous Fire - from a historical standpoint, although it probably is overpowered when not playing advanced rules.
Perhaps rather than just having to...
Sorry to resurrect an old thread, but I'm interested to know if this has been implemented in house rules.
I liked the idea of limiting to single shot or grape during continuous fire and thought...
That's great! Thanks Aaron & Rob.
Thanks for the welcome! Really appreciated.
Thanks Rob. What did you do conversion wise? And are you using a different deck or statline to reflect the reduced handling/training/gunnery on the merchantman?
Killick, as a fellow Aussie and Queenslander, where have you found the best place to purchase from for Ares SoG?
At present I'm finishing shipping to be the biggest cost impediment to building a...
